On October 3, 1953 he was united in marriage to Charlene Holmberg of Kerkhoven. In February of 1955 Maynard enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years. He received an honorable discharge in February of 1957. The couple lived their entire lives in the Starbuck area. In 1969 they bought Maynard's parents farm. They lived on the farm in Langhei Township for the remainder of their lives.
Maynard worked for Barsness Construction of Glenwood and the iron ore mines in Spring Valley, MN. In 1963 he began to work for the Pope County Highway Department. He retired from the highway department in 1993. He also farmed. After his retirement Maynard spent many hours volunteering at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. Maynard was a very active life long member of East Zion Lutheran Church, served on the Langhei Township Board and was a member of the American Legion. Maynard loved his time in the U.S. Army and often talked about the people he had known and the places he had been. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, farming, visiting with neighbors and friends, listening and dancing to old time music, reading, playing harmonica, spear fishing, restoring old farm machinery and traveling. He was planning another trip to Norway. Those plans were cut short by a diagnosis of cancer in April of 2012.
