Alice Colden

Funeral services for Alice Colden of Starbuck will be held Monday, August 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Starbuck. Reverend Paul Johnson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Starbuck.

Alice Margaret Carlson, daughter of Carl and Olga (Hegman) Carlson, was born August 30, 1928 in Mayville, North Dakota. Alice grew up in Starbuck, where she was baptized and confirmed on May 16, 1943 at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Reverend Gerhard Forde. She attended and graduated from Starbuck High School in 1947. Following her schooling, Alice worked in restaurants in Glenwood for a short time, before returning to the farm to help her dad. On October 15, 1949, she was united in marriage to Elom Colden in the parsonage at Indherred Lutheran Church by Reverend Gerhard Forde. Following their marriage, Alice worked in a restaurant in Starbuck until the early 1960's. She then began working at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home, where she remained for the next 42 years. After retiring, Alice continued working at the nursing home as a volunteer, which she continued to do even after becoming a resident herself. Alice was truly a caregiver by nature, and always went out of her way to help anyone who needed assistance.

Alice was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Sons of Norway. She enjoyed putting puzzles together, doing crafts, embroidering towels and being outdoors. She also loved traveling, especially the trips she took to Norway and the many trips to visit her Aunt Esther in California.

Alice died on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, having lived to reach the age of 83 years.

She is survived by two children: Marjory (Craig) Marlow of Anoka and Mark (Linda) Colden of Starbuck; three grandchildren: Scott Marlow of Princeton, Melissa (Chad) Plattner of Big Lake and Sandra Marlow of Anoka and three great-grandchildren: Brady Plattner, Kylie Plattner and Hailey Plattner. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and one brother: Arlen Carlson.

Pallbearers for the service are Gary Colden, Glen Sibell, Rick Colden, Myron Sletto, Dan Weber and Chad Plattner. Dee Syverson will serve as organist for the service with Joy Erdman serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
