Amanda Dohlen

The funeral for Amanda Melinda Dohlen, of Morris, Minnesota will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus, with Minister Minette Stalheim Johnson officiating. Visitation will be on Monday at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Scandia East Cemetery, near Cyrus.

Amanda Malinda Hegg, was born August 19th 1929, to Gust and Malinda (Raguse) Hegg in Morris, MN. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church, and was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus, MN.

Amanda attended country school in District 5, rural Framnas Township, through the 8th grade. Amanda then attended Cyrus High School, and she graduated one year early, as Salutatorian of the Class of 1947. In 1951, Amanda graduated from Teacher's College in Fergus Falls, MN.

For over 21 years, Amanda served as a teacher in local rural school districts. She taught 1st through 6th grades in the days of a one room country school. Amanda had a passion for education, and she believed higher education and hard work are the keys to success in life.

On October 15, 1949, Amanda married Eyjulf Dohlen. To this union, two children were born, Gerard "Gary" and Carol. Eyjulf and Amanda lived at their century farm in Swan Lake Township, rural Cyrus. Amanda was a homemaker and farmer's wife who drove tractor, raised chickens, and tended a garden. Eyjulf and Amanda also enjoyed wintering at their home in Missouri.

A talented writer, Amanda was a correspondent for a regional women's magazine in Missouri for three years, with numerous articles published in this magazine. Amanda also wrote weekly community news columns for three local newspapers for many years. One always knew "who visited who" after reading Amanda's columns.

Following her teaching career, Amanda studied to become a real estate broker/agent, and she received her broker's license. Her love for selling real estate continued for over 30 years, as she sold numerous homes and farms. Amanda prided herself on being a progressive, career woman.

Amanda's hobbies also included painting, playing piano, growing beautiful flowers, and baking wedding cakes. She decorated wedding cakes for numerous clients and also for her children and grandchildren. Amanda also loved attending birthday parties and school events for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Following Eyjulf's passing in 2001, Amanda remained at their Swan Lake farm home, and she continued to farm with her son. For the last five years, Amanda has resided at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sharon Dohlen, in rural Cyrus. On April 17, 2015, Amanda passed away peacefully at the home of Gary and Sharon Dohlen, surrounded by her family. She lived to 85 years.

She is survived by one son: Gary (Sharon) Dohlen; six grandchildren: Nichole Asmus, Jacob (Krystal) Dohlen, Ashley Dohlen, John (Heather) Davis, Christine (Josh) Lethert and Paul Davis; ten great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Lea Joy and Justin Asmus, Jace Dohlen, Caleb, Micah, Christiana and Nathan Lethert, and Shane and Shelby Davis and special caregivers: Angie Strunk and Ladonna Stock. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her daughter: Carol Davis and grandson-in-law: Kurt Asmus.
