Arlene Amanda Backlund, daughter of Carl and Nancy (Peterson) Backlund, was born May 22, 1925 in Grant County, rural Hoffman, Minnesota, where she grew up and attended school in the Hoffman and Kensington area. She was confirmed on June 18, 1939 in Hoffman. Following her schooling, Arlene worked various jobs in the area. On January 19, 1946, she was united in marriage to Raymond Bye on the Orlin Maanum farm near Hoffman. The couple made their home in the Cyrus area where they continued to dairy farm on his family?s farm until 1994. They continued to live on the farm assisting their son Larry with the farm operation.
Arlene was a member of the Nora Lutheran Church, where she was active in WELCA and the quilter's group. She enjoyed canning, gardening, quilting and cooking for the Nora Lutefisk Supper. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Arlene died on Sunday, October 1, 2006 at the St. Cloud Hospital, having lived to reach the age of 81 years.
She is survived by: two sons: Raylyn (Ruthie) Bye of Onamia and Larry (Rita) Bye of Cyrus; two daughters: Carole Westby of Excelsior and Patty Bye-Carbert (Mike Carbert) of Avon; nine grandchildren: Reed and Ryan Bye, Sarah Bateman, Michael Westby, Hannah and Lynnea Bye and Evan, Taylor and Kendra Carbert; three great-grandchildren: Brett Bye, Brianna Bye and James Sumption; three sisters: Dorothy (Arnold) Overgaard of Starbuck, Mary Ann Schopper of Minneapolis and Lois (Wendell) Brosdahl of Eden Prairie; four sisters-in-law: Irene Blocher of Starbuck, Gladys Greiner of Morris, Eldorise Bye of Hoffman and Bonnie Backlund of Elk River and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; son-in-law: James Westby; her parents; one brother: Harold Backlund and three sisters: Helen Maanum, Jane Wensel and Kay Hjelm.
Pallbearers for the service are Arlene's grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Reed and Ryan Bye, Sarah Bateman, Michael Westby, Hannah and Lynnea Bye, Evan, Taylor and Kendra Carbert, Brett Bye, Brianna Bye and James Sumption. Cynthia Revering will serve as organist for the service with Karen Boysen serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
