Arthur Johnson

Memorial services for Arthur Johnson of Starbuck will be held Monday, January 3, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Reverend Sarah Taylor will be officiating. Visitation will be held on one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Military Rites will be provided by the Starbuck VFW Honor Guard. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Arthur Clifford Johnson, son of John and Gena (Moe) Johnson, was born February 23, 1921 in Bemidji, Minnesota, where he grew up on his parent's farm. He attended school in Bemidji, where he graduated from Bemidji High School. Following his schooling, Art enlisted in the United States Army, serving in WWII. He served in the 222nd Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Infantry Division - in the European Theater of Operations. While serving his country, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Art received an honorable discharge in 1945. On September 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dolores Hanson in Baudette, Minnesota. Following their marriage, the couple made their home on Dolores' parents' homestead, where Art farmed and cut timber. In 1950, the couple moved to New Rockford, North Dakota, where Art learned the dry-cleaning business. They later moved to Carrington, North Dakota, where they owned and operated Central City Cleaners until 1968, when they sold the business and moved to Starbuck, MN. After moving to Starbuck, Art worked at the Starbuck Cleaners. He then went to work for the State of Minnesota as a boiler operator/inspector until 1986 when he retired. Art and Dolores continued to make their home in Starbuck. Art moved to the Glenwood Retirement Village in November of this year.

Art was a member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck and the Starbuck American Legion and the VFW. Art especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. The family would like to thank the Pope County Hospice for all their care and support.

Art died on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood, MN, having lived to reach the age of 89 years.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Dolores Johnson of Starbuck; two sons: Michael (Jeanie) Johnson of Glenwood and Mark Johnson of Starbuck; three daughters: Joanne (Robert) Herron of Glenwood, Sandra Beaudoin (special friend: John Sloane) of Maple Grove and Patricia (Jeffrey) Aaberg of Kenai, AL; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Verna Anderson and Jo Souder both of Bemidji and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Lawrence Johnson and Morris Johnson and three sisters: Gladys Buckman, Geneva Chapman and Doris Hames.

Honorary pallbearers for the service are Arts Grandchildren: Nicole Peterson, Anne Guerrero, Jonathan Burns, Scott Herron, Kristina Fink, Matthew Shervey and Janelle Johnson and his great-grandchildren: Ian Peterson, Madilyn Peterson, Alaina Peterson, Samuel Guerrero, Benjamin Guerrero, Dakota Graves and Kendra Fink. Shari Opdahl will serve as organist for the service. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
