Funeral services for Arvid Flaten of Starbuck, MN will be held Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at 11:00 am at Fron Lutheran church in Starbuck with Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation Monday, November 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Starbuck Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church, and burial at the Fron Cemetery.
Arvid Norman Flaten, son of Theodore and Alma (Lagred) Flaten, was born November 29, 1920, in Langhei Township of Pope County, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm in the Swift Falls area, attending school in Langhei Township. He was baptized and confirmed at East Zion Lutheran Church, rural Starbuck. Arvid, at age 18, began working at Starbuck Cement Products Company, various construction jobs, and eventually got into carpentry with his brother, LuVerne. On June 28, 1943, Arvid was united in marriage to Lillian Aaberg at Fron Lutheran Church.
Arvid was an active member of Fron Lutheran, serving at one time as a deacon. Arvid enjoyed getting together with family and friends including activities such as bowling, snowmobiling, and dancing at Lakeside Ballroom (where he met Lillian). In retirement, Arvid and Lillian enjoyed woodcrafting and traveling to craft sales where they met a lot of people. They also enjoyed following their nieces and nephews participating in various school, sports, and church activities.
Arvid died on Thursday, November 24, 2011, at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN, having reached the age of 90 years, 11 months, and 24 days.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian, of Starbuck; sister, Marlys Hagert; sisters-in-law Marlys Flaten, Hilma Larson, and brother-in-law, Palmer (Joy) Aaberg, all of Starbuck; sister-in-law Tina Hanson of Salinas, CA, and many nieces and nephews. Arvid was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Gladys Ronnie, and brother, LuVerne, plus more than a few brothers- and sisters-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Fron Lutheran Church.
