Bernice Olive Halvorson, daughter of Hans and Nina (Olson) Halvorson, was born August 15, 1919 in Starbuck, Minnesota, where she grew up and was baptized and confirmed at Minnewaska Lutheran Church. She received her schooling at Starbuck High School. On June 24, 1939, she was united in marriage to Ellsworth Berg. Following their marriage the couple lived in Starbuck, where they raised their five children. Ellsworth died in January, 1969 and Bernice continued to live in Starbuck with her children. On March 5, 1984, she was united in marriage to Edward Aaberg. Bernice and Edward continued to live in Starbuck. Edward died on February 20, 2007. Bernice continued to live in Starbuck and in January of 2008, she moved to the Central Minnesota Senior Care Center, where she has lived until the time of her death.
Bernice was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. She was very active in support of Project New Hope. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, baking cookies and was a very avid Twins fan. She loved taking care of her loved ones.
Bernice died on Friday, July 3, 2009 at Central Minnesota Senior Care Center in Starbuck, having lived to reach the age of 89 years.
She is survived by one son: Eugene (Karen) Berg of Parker, AZ; one daughter: Cheryl (Brent) Shelton of Alexandria, VA; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters: Clarice Hanson of Starbuck, Lorraine Tibetts of Minneapolis and Olive (Roy) Berens of Benson and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; three daughters: Beverly, Annette and Janet; four brothers: Harold, Leroy “Bud”, Marvin and Donald Halvorson and one sister: Carol Ann Mathies.
Pallbearers for the service are: Kurt Swensrud, Jeremy Berg, Jason Beaird, Kevin Swensrud, Tyrell Swensrud and Zach Mattison. Honorary pallbearers are Kyle Swanson and Dylan Swensrud. Shari Opdahl will serve as organist for the service with Vic Vatthauer serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
