Blanche Frances Lund, was born October 15, 1914, to Charley and Agnes (Johnson) Lund in Rolling Forks Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. She had three brothers and three sisters. Blanche attended school in District #77 through the eighth grade, where she made many lasting friendships. In 1928, she moved to Benson with her family and she graduated from Benson High School in 1932. After high school, she worked in Minneapolis as a nanny for two boys. Her pay was $5.00 a week plus room and board. On her day off she would take a streetcar downtown and go to the movies. Later she also worked in a restaurant and jewelry store in Appleton. She married Hershel Bartz on April 30, 1935 in Benson. Their daughter, Karen, was born September 2, 1937.

Blanche and Hershel made their home in Appleton until 1950, when they moved to Benson to operate the Bartz Mobil Station. Blanche was a homemaker, but also worked as a bookkeeper at the station. She also worked at Swift Printing in Benson for ten years. Hershel retired in 1975 and they moved to Lake Minnewaska, where they made many good friends and enjoyed "lake life". After Hershel's death in 1994, she moved to Starbuck. With the wonderful help and care of her Starbuck "family" she was able to live independently for 98+ years.

Blanche was a member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. She enjoyed family and friends, cooking, baking, flowers, gardening, animals…especially cats…Many! She liked having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit and would always pack a "little lunch" for the trip back to their homes.

Blanche died on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Courage Cottage in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 98 years.

She is survived by her daughter: Karen (Richard) Whitaker of Zumbrota; three grandchildren: Nanci (Brian) Adams of Zumbrota, Andrea Whitaker of Taiwan and Laurie Whitaker (Mark Edwards) of Sartell; three great-grandchildren: Preston Whitaker (Hali Meyer), Ashley Adams and Sean Adams; one great-great-granddaughter: Aubrey Whitaker and many relative and friends.
