Memorial services for Albert Payne of Starbuck, MN will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood, Minnesota. Father Eberhard Schefers will be officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a rosary and prayers at 6:30 at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Bridgets Catholic Cemetery in DeGraff.
Albert Andrew 'Bud' Payne was born on March 20, 1931, in rural Benson, Minnesota, to Warren and Margaret (Zurn) Payne. Bud grew up on the family farm and graduated from Benson High School with the Class of 1949. Bud was introduced to the love of his life, Betty, by his twin sister, Albie. Bud married Elizabeth Jule (Betty) Foley on January 6, 1951. Together they raised eleven children, six girls and five boys, with patience and love.
The young couple lived in Benson with Bud's parents until February, 1952. They moved to Hancock where they farmed and raised livestock. In addition to farming, Bud worked at the Hancock Elevator. In May, 1968, he began working for Hancock Concrete as the fork lift operator, retiring after 25 years of service. He valued the time spent with coworkers and neighbors, developing lifelong friendships. In 1982, Bud and Betty moved to Starbuck and built their dream home on the lake with the help of all their family and neighbors. After retirement, Bud worked at Star Motors for several years. Bud enjoyed spending time fishing, hunting, and playing cards with family and friends, and he romanced Betty with his smooth dance skills.
Bud would pack for days ahead of time for his many deer hunting trips with his nephew, Jim! A trip to Montana with Jim and Bud's sons provided a lifetime of memories. After Bud's retirement, Bud and Betty began traveling. They took several trips with their oldest daughters. The trips included Arizona, Alaska, Ireland with Betty's family, and California for a granddaughter's wedding. As recently as April, 2010, Bud & Betty travelled in a camper to Great Falls, MT, with some of their children to visit relatives. Bud was known for loving sports and taking pictures of his children's sporting events as well as band and choir concerts. One highlight was celebrating the state wrestling championship of his youngest son in 1982. Bud enjoyed watching the Vikings and attended many Vikings games with his friends and family. He loved playing a variety of card games but really enjoyed playing and teaching pinochle. In his later years, Bud enjoyed watching and reading westerns. He had a quiet faith that deepened in the past year with the loss of his wife and daughter. It helped him to accept the turns of life. Bud passed away peacefully in the Glenwood hospital on June 30, 2011, surrounded by the love of his children. He attained the age of 80 years, 3 months, and 30 days.
Bud is survived by his children: Kathy Payne of Minnetonka, Warren Payne (Ginger Schneider) of Lake City, David (Sue) Payne of Hibbing, Daniel (Gayle) Payne of Morris, Marg (Tom) Schmitz of Rosholt, SD, Brian (Kristi) Payne of Princeton, Christine (Keith) Rieckman of Willmar, Brenda (Steve DeMorett) Payne of Sartell, Rob (Maureen) Payne of Freeport, and Stephanie (Marcus Howard) Payne of Edina; 23 grandchildren: Jennifer (Joe) Fort, Melissa Payne, Tony (Leah) Payne, Karey (Jason Strege) Payne, Josh (Andrea) Payne, Joe (Sarah) Payne, Dawn (Sam) Weigel, Jeff Schmitz, Paul Schmitz, Nathan (Stacy) Payne, Jeremy (MaKayla) Payne, Tyler (Stephanie) Payne, Ryan Rieckman, Brandon Rieckman, Ben DeMorett, Connor DeMorett, Evan DeMorett, Logan Payne, Becca Schmitz, Logan Schmitz, Katana Howard, Quarrille Howard, and Nokoma Howard; 8 great grandchildren: Eva and Charles Fort, Amelia Payne, Warren Payne, Lexington Payne, Jack and Emmitt Payne, Dylan Keim, and Mason Rach; his sisters: Rose Mary (Vernal) Nokleby of Montevideo and Albie (Henry) Walsh of Benson and his Hong Kong grandchildren and families. Preceding him in death were his parents, Warren and Margaret Payne, sisters Thelma Pahl and Lillian Flolo, brother-in-law Manual Flolo, his wife, Betty, and daughter, Becky Payne.
