Funeral services for Carl O. Benson of Park Rapids, formerly of Morris will be held Monday, December 30, 2013 at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church in Morris. Reverend Paul Erdal will be officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery in Morris. Military honors will be provided by the Morris American Legion, VFW and AmVets.
Carl Oscar Benson, son of Carl and Estrid (Olson) Benson, was born on January 30, 1935 in Grand Forks, ND and grew up in Larimore, ND. He attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND and graduated with a degree in pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist for almost 50 years in Redwood Falls, Alexandria, Sauk Centre and most recently in Morris, where he owned and operated Benson Drug for 30 years. Carl was united in marriage to Greta Kampen on August 18, 1962. The couple moved to Morris in 1970, where they raised their sons. Greta died on August 10, 1986. Carl continued to live in Morris before moving to Park Rapids.
Carl was honored to be appointed to the Minnesota State Pharmacy Board, including a term as president. He served in the Army and was a member of the Shriners and the Masons. He loved hunting and fishing, backpacking, spending time at his lake cabin, and watching his sons play sports.
Carl passed away peacefully on December 26, 2013 at Heritage Cottage in Park Rapids, MN, having lived to reach the age of 78 years.
He is survived by his two sons: Dr. David (Linda) Benson of Park Rapids and John (Laura) Benson of Medina and three grandchildren, Matthew, Marcus and Sydney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Greta: his parents, Carl and Estrid Benson and his sister, Consuelo Carruthers.
Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
