Catherine "Kit" Schacherer, daughter of Albert and Anna (Alcorn) Schacherer, was born September 29, 1905 in Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota. It was in this same area that she attended school and grew into womanhood. She was married on January 29, 1929 to Camillus "Slim" Kellen. This union was blessed with six children: Yvonne, Gerald "Gene", Marlys, Jerome, Wesley and Betty. They farmed in the Madison, Minnesota area until the early 40's, when they moved to Morris, Minnesota. Catherine was a housewife most of her married life and devoted her time to her husband and children. She was a skilled seamstress, avid quilt maker and a wonderful cook. In her later years, she devoted much of her time doing volunteer work at their church, the Eagles and the VFW.
In December of 1970, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband. Catherine continued to make her home in the Morris area until failing health caused her to become a resident of the West Wind Village in November of 1995. She was a long-time member of Assumption Catholic Church, where she was an active member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was also a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Kit died on January 13, 2007 at the West Wind Village in Morris, MN, having lived to reach the age of 101 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Gerald (Rita) Kellen of San Angelo, TX, Jerome Kellen of Minneapolis, Wesley (Phyllis) Kellen of Winter Haven, FL, Betty Johnson of Winter Haven, FL; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters: Yvonne and Marlys; two daughters-in-law: May and Ramona; one son-in-law: Ken Johnson; one grandson: Kevin Foley; two great-grandchildren: Nikki Mangel and Brian Thompson; her parents; four sisters and five brothers.
Kit's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers for the service. Pallbearers are: LaVay Cairl, Greg Foley, Jerry Kellen, Lori Kellen, Jan Johnson and Terry Foley. Honorary pallbearers are: Jean Ritzschke, Robin Mangel, Tom Kellen, Shari Thompson, Connie Brandt, Jodi Hintzen, Sean Foley, Monie Perron, Tammy Flandrick, Becky Trujillo, Julie Seidel, Rick Kellen, Kim Johnson and Jim Johnson. Dorothy Vick will serve as pianist and song leader for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
