A visitation will be on Thursday, March 6, from 5-7:00 p.m. with a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Horton Township.
Charles ‘Chuck’ Dwain Spohr was born at home to John and Esther Meriam (Schlupp) Spohr on May 20, 1939. He attended country school at District 20 in Horton Township. In 1957, he graduated from the West Central School of Agriculture. He was enrolled in the first class at the University of Minnesota, Morris. But, when his dad got sick, he stayed home to farm. As Chuck was known to say, “I farmed all my life.” Chuck married Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Ann Boyum on August 22, 1970 in Battle Lake, MN. Together they joined Faith Lutheran Church in Morris, MN where Chuck was baptized on March 31, 1971. They have been members of Faith Lutheran for 54 years.
Chuck proudly served his community as a member of the Morris School Board and co-chair of the building committee at Faith Lutheran Church. After retiring from farming, he tended the grounds of Luther Crest West Bible Camp while Liz cooked meals for the campers. On August 2, 2008, Chuck was the 654th recipient of a heart transplant at the University of MN. This life-saving procedure allowed him the joy of being a grandpa for over 16 years.
Chuck was an avid collector of usable things and a teller of jokes. Perhaps he was most dedicated to promoting the accomplishments of his wife, his children, his nieces and nephews, and his grandchildren. He relished every degree earned, every pie baked, every game played, every building erected, every crop harvested, every song sung, every fish caught, and every sermon delivered.
Chuck passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025 at West Wind Village in Morris where he was treated so graciously by the staff and residents. He was 85 years old.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents John and Esther Spohr, brothers Wilbert and Fritz Spohr, sister-in-law Karen Spohr, in-laws Kermit and Ann Boyum, and sister-in-law Martha Rose Boyum.
His legacy of love lives on in his wife and his rock Liz; his five children: Ed (Linda) Spohr of Minneapolis, Mary (Jim Roesner) Spohr of Minneapolis, Sara Spohr of Minneapolis, Martha (Michael) Hanson of Morris, and Bill Spohr of Morris; and his 10 grandchildren: Benjamin, Charlie, Ray, Karina, Anna, Arne, Maria, Freddy, Frances, and Martin.
He also leaves behind his brother Eddie (Millie) Spohr of Camarillo, CA; sister Ilene (Allan) Burnham of Morris; sister-in-law Ruth Spohr of Hancock, sister-in-law Gloria Spohr of Morris, sister-in-law Kari (John) Gramith of Norwood-Young America; brother-in-law Peter (Carol) Boyum of Battle Lake, brother-in-law Paul (Pam) Boyum of Battle Lake, as well as many nieces and nephews and good friends.
