Funeral services for Charles Knabe of Kensington, Minnesota will be Monday, January 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Nora Lutheran Church, rural Kensington, MN. Reverend Kathryn Rothman will be officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Charles Henry Knabe, son of Charles Sr. and Ella (Benjamin) Knabe, was born September 6, 1926 in Jackson, Minnesota. He grew up in Heron Lake, MN, where he attended country school. Following his schooling, Charles continued farming, before being drafted in the United States Army on December 13, 1944. Charles served in WWII in the Philippians and Japan, receiving an honorable discharge on November 16, 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Heron Lake, where he continued to farm. On June 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mildred Will in Lamar, Iowa. The couple continued to farm in Heron Lake. Charles purchased their farm in the Kensington area in 1961. He farmed until he retired in 2013. Charles entered the Glenwood Retirement Village in January, 2014, where he continued to live until the time of his death.
Charles had a passion for farming with his son and grandchildren. In his early years he enjoyed hunting and trapping, custom corn shelling and dancing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Charles died on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood, MN. He lived to 88 years.
He is survived by five children: Debbie (David) Gilbertson of Kensington, Virgil (Donna) Knabe of Morris, Dale (Mary) Knabe of Kensington, Judy (Shawn) Kleist of Willmar and Jody (Jon) Cunningham of Hancock; 13 grandchildren: Mindy (Cole) Meyer, Mandy (Tony) Douvier, Chad (Jessica) Gilbertson, Carly (fiance: Joseph) Gilbertson, Corey (Brooke) Knabe, Casey (Heather) Knabe, Chelsey (Trent) Novotny, Lacey (Jon) Oettel, Lane Kleist, Allie (Garrett) Beiningen, Stacie (Eric) Peterson, Lindsie Cunningham and Collin Cunningham and 16 great-grandchildren: Tyson and Brooklyn Meyer, Damian and Ellie Douvier, Kristin, Kalli and Brynnlee Gilbertson, Kaylee and Kenzie Knabe, Kaden and Keason Knabe, Cooper and Brody Novotny, Ahna and Josiah Oettel and Ebon Peterson. He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter; one infant son: Bradley John Knabe; infant great-granddaughter: Hadley Marie Knabe and siblings: Louis Anderson, Ben Anderson, August Anderson, Myrtle Madigan, Lila Hedricks and Dorothy Martin.
