Charles Jacob Schmidt, son of Henry and Mary (Van Kempen) Schmidt, was born January 24, 1916 in Morris, Minnesota, where he grew up and received his schooling. Following his schooling, he began to farm in Hodges Township in Stevens County. On September 20, 1939, he was united in marriage to Irene Powers in Morris. The couple remained in Stevens County, where they continued to farm and raise their nine children. Irene died on June 16, 2002. Charles moved to Sky view Court in Morris on 1997 and has remained there until the time of his death.
Charlie was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. He was a charter member of The Minnesota Flying Farmers and The International Flying Farmers, where he also served as president for both organizations. For several years he was a member of The Prairie Pioneer Sams RV Camping Chapter.
Charlie enjoyed flying, softball and playing cards. He also played drums in the Schmidt Band. He was a big Weather Channel fan and a fan of the Minnesota Twins.
Charlie died on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 90 years.
He is survived by his children: John (Donna) Schmidt of Knoxville, TN; Patricia (Paul) Brandt of Bloomington, IL; Richard (Priscilla) Schmidt of Riverdale, GA, Thomas (Sandy) Schmidt of Shakopee, Gary (Nancy) Schmidt of Marshall, Kenneth (Sherry) Schmidt of Hendersonville, NC, Donald Schmidt of Morris and Rebecca (Chuck) Johnson of Mesa, AZ; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters: Rose (Manley) Anderson of Morris and Marg (Doug) Garberick of El Cajon, CA; brothers: Francis (Madelyn) Schmidt of Morris, Henry (Lucille) Schmidt Jr. of Columbia Heights, Albert (Beverley) Schmidt of Morris and Jerry (Sylvia) Schmidt of Morris and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; his parents; infant daughter: Sharon; granddaughter: Stephanie; grandson: Scott; brothers: Eugene and John Schmidt and sisters: Veronica Schmidt, Kathryn Sunquist and Helen Lyons.
Pallbearers for the service are: Paul Schmidt, Jeff Brandt, Lori Kayman, Brad Schmidt, Jenni Schmidt and Dean Anderson. Honorary pallbearers are: Mike Schmidt, Barry Brandt, Todd Schmidt, Kimberly Schmidt, Kelly Davenport, Cori Johnson, Matthew Johnson and Dana Johnson. Josh Fischer will serve as pianist and song leader for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
