Clarence Michael Grossman was born April 21, 1919, to John F. and Anna (Leuthard) Grossman on the family farm south of Chokio. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chokio. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1938 and attended Kansas State College one year before returning home to help on the family farm. On September 9, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marie Riley at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris. The couple took over the family farm where they remained until retirement in 1980, when they built a home in Chokio. Through the years, Clarence was very active in many organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Farmers Union, township board and the Chokio Senior Center. He was active in his church, serving as Eucharistic minister and usher and helping the parish priest whenever asked.
Always an athlete, Clarence played baseball much of his life. After high school, he played for Town Teams in Chokio and Clinton. When he wasn't playing ball, he loved watching it at the ballpark and on television - especially the Twins. He particularly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and other activities. When chores were done, Clarence would round up the ten children and many of the neighbor kids and wild games of baseball, softball, football and volleyball were held in the farm yard.
Clarence was also an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed woodworking and giving his creations to family and friends. But most of all, Clarence enjoyed a rousing game of cards. He never met a smear game he didn't like. A generous, kind man, Clarence always was available to help those in need.
