Funeral services for Cornelia Joos of Morris, formerly of Hancock, will be held Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Apostolic Christian Church near Morris. The Apostolic Christian Church Ministers will be officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Cornelia Marie Joos, better known as "Neil," daughter of Jacob and Anna Nohl, was born on January 10, 1915, on the family farm near Hancock, Minnesota. Neil graduated 8th grade and helped at the household of her sister, Viola, who died from a brain tumor at an early age. She also was a caretaker and housekeeper for two older women who lived in Morris during her teenage years. At an early age, Neil knew that she loved to be creative and taught herself how to sew. She sewed for many friends and relatives over the years; everyone enjoying that they could just bring her a picture and not have to find a pattern. In these later years, you would often hear Neil say that she had been sewing for 80+ years. Her love of "stitching" also included beautiful quilts, and each of the grandchildren received a quilt for their wedding present. She also enjoyed gifting her quilted pillows to all the great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Neil tended her large garden on the farm, and always was ready to invite anyone who arrived from out of town or neighbors in for a meal. Her family especially loved her apple pies and skinny pancakes, and her caramel rolls were some of the best in town.
Neil married David Emil Joos on September 30, 1937, and shortly after marrying they moved to their farm just west of Hancock on the Old Highway where they lived for 42 years. Fishing trips on Lake Winnie and other area lakes, as well as annual trips south and two trips to Germany, were always cherished time together for Dave and Neil. They moved to Hancock in 1980, and David died on February 25, 1985. Neil continued to live in Hancock surrounded by her sons and family and many relatives and friends (and also made many trips to visit her daughter and family in Montana), until she moved to West Wind Village in 2007. She really missed her "little house" in Hancock in these later years.
Visits from the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and neighbors were always cause for celebration and a special meal. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many.
Cornelia died on June 18, 2011, at the age of 96, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her brother, Noah (Shirley) Nohl; two sons, Don (Jeanette), and Dave (Phyllis), of Hancock, and one daughter, Shirley (Dennis Arsenault) of Bozeman, Montana; and grandchildren: Greg (Sherryl), Steve (Karma), and Doug (special friend, Julie McCellen). Shelly (Tom Bobendrier), Eric (Angie), and Annie (Peter Geddis). Nicole (Michael Miles), Simone (Jeremy Hogan), Janine (Matthew Mohr). And 20 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, Viola Heil, laverna Heil and Edith Joos; and three brothers, Irvin, Lawrence and Orville
Pallbearers for the service are: Harvey Joos, Gary Joos, Kenny Nohl, Brad Heil, Roy Nohl and Ray Nohl. The Apostolic Christian Church Choir will provide the special music for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
