Dagny Irene Schwendemann was born on January 27, 1934 to Thormod and Bertha (Schultze) Brevig on the Brevig Family Farm in Blue Mounds Township five miles southwest of Starbuck. She was baptized on February 28, 1934 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Starbuck, Minnesota, by Pastor Nels Forde. During the winter of 1936, Dagny and her family had to quarantine at home because of the Scarlet Fever. Dagny was unable to see her sister, Adeline, during that time and lost hearing in one ear because of special treatments used to treat Scarlet Fever. From the fall of 1940 through spring of 1948, she attended school in District 42, which was half a mile from her home. She was confirmed on April 4, 1948 and graduated from high school at WCSA-Morris on March 30, 1952. That same year she was united in marriage to Walter “Sonny” Schwendemann on September 6, 1952, at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Reverend Forde. The couple lived on the Otteson Farm for the next 15 years. There they were blessed with five children: Jon, Dan, Nancy, Jane, and David. They then moved to the “home farm” in February of 1968. Soon after, they were blessed with another son, Glen, and in 1971, a daughter, Susan. Susan passed away on April 3, 1971. Her husband, Walter “Sonny” passed away on November 19th, 2018 after 66 years of marriage. Dagny lived at Holly Ridge for the past three years of her life.
She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Greenland Gadabouts Homemaker Club from about 1966-1990, was a Sunday School Teacher for 15 years, a part of Women of ELCA and president for 10 years, was a secretary for 9 years, and collected news for The Starbuck Times. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, was a past Pope County spelling bee champion, enjoyed quilting with women from Immanuel Church, loved watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and playing Scrabble, doing crossword puzzles, and reading. She especially enjoyed her grandkids and great grandchildren!
Dagny Schwendemann of Starbuck passed away on Tuesday, January 5th at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, Minnesota. She was 86 years old.
