Darlene Jane Giese, daughter of Emil and Ella (Mesenbrink) Giese, was born May 23, 1927 in Horton Township in Stevens County, Minnesota, where she grew up and was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. She began her schooling at Country School District #20 and later graduated from the West Central School of Agriculture. Following her schooling, she worked as a nurse’s aide in Glenwood, the Stevens County Hospital and at the Stevens Community Medical Center. During that time she also worked with hospice and home dialysis. On March 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harry Hauglund. To this union seven children were born. The couple made their home in Synnes Township, until 1970, when they moved to Alberta. Harry passed away in 2003 and in 2004, Darlene moved to Morris, where she has continued to live until the time of her death.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alberta, where she belonged to the choir. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading, listening to music and singing. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Darlene died on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at West Wind Village in Morris, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 81 years.
She is survived by one son: Jim (JoAnne) Hauglund of Donnelly; four daughters: Janette Brown (and friend: Frank) of Morris, Joanne (Steve) Maijala of Delano, Joyce (Rick) Kramer of Wyola, MT and Jenifer (Scott) Thompson of Lowry; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Harvey (Rhoda) Giese of St. Paul and Danny (Karen) Giese of Willmar; one sister: Margie (Laurel) Lawrence of Cumberland, WI and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; two children: Judy and Connie; one granddaughter: Mackenzie Hauglund and one sister: Ruby Hauglund.
Pallbearers for the service are: Dennis VanKampen, Jason Brown, Scott Thompson, Rick Kramer, Steve Maijala and Smokey VanKampen. Joanne Foley will serve as organist for the service with Lisa Cain and Linda Anderson serving as soloists. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
