Funeral services for David N. Baukol of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Reverend Paul Johnson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in Fron Lutheran Cemetery, rural Starbuck.
David N. Baukol was born in Mahmomen County, Minnesota on April 6, 1941 to Joseph and Cora Baukol. He was baptized at Aspeland Lutheran Church in Flom, MN and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead on October 28, 1956. He graduated from Ulen High School in 1960 and from Moorhead State College in 1964. He taught Jr. High Math at Menagha, MN for two years prior to coming to Starbuck. He taught Jr. High Math and Algebra at Starbuck and Minnewaska Schools for 32 years and continued his love for teaching as a substitute teacher. He truly enjoyed coaching and doing statistics for many sports. David influenced countless students as a teacher and coach. David was united in marriage to Joyce Baukol Johnshoy in September, 1968.
David was very active in the Starbuck community. He was a member of Fron Lutheran Church, the Starbuck Lions, Starbuck Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Glacial State Park and the Starbuck Depot Society. He was Sexton of the Fron Lutheran Cemetery and active in First We Have Coffee at Fron. He was awarded the highly esteemed Melvin Jones Award in Lions and the Lions Helen Keller Award. He loved being busy with helping others, mowing lawns, tutoring students and painting.
David enjoyed following all sports. He especially loved attending all the activities of his grandchildren. He loved visiting with students and former students whenever he could. He treasured time with his family. He was quick with a smile, a helping hand, a bit of sports information, a joke and always a few stories. He will be missed by all.
David died on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 69 years.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years: Joyce Baukol of Starbuck; daughters: Laree (and Vyke) Breen of Benson, Lisa Brakel (and fiancé: Randy Nelson) of Eagan and Heidi Wendt of Starbuck; nine grandchildren: Nicholas, Stephanie, Haley, Allison, Olivia, Ginger, Tiffany, Marissa and Ashley; one brother: Robert (Betty) Baukol of Moorhead; sisters and brothers-in-law: Diane and Duane Hagen of Kensington, Gail and Steve Marstad of Eagan and Faye and Steve Klein of Eagan and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers for the service are: Nicholas Brakel, Vyke Breen, Duane Hagen, Michael Hagen, Steve Klein, Steve Marstad and Todd Starns. Honorary pallbearers are all who called him friend. Shari Opdahl will serve as organist for the service with Joy DuBois serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
