David Edward Stevenson was born to Bertha (Nicely) and Floyd Stevenson on January 29, 1944, in Morris, MN. He attended school in Morris, where he was a multi-sport athlete in football, wrestling, basketball, and track. After graduating high school in 1962, he briefly attended NDSU until he was drafted. He joined the Navy and after basic training, he was stationed at the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, CA. He was an Underwater Demolition Technician, whose job it was to train the pilots to swim. He served honorably for four years. While stationed at the Naval Air Facility, he met Susan Polk. They were engaged in 1965 and married in 1967. They moved to Minnesota in 1967 and made their home in Morris.
After leaving the military, Dave took a job with the City of Morris as a Police Officer. Their daughter, Becky was born in 1969 and their son, Paul, was born in 1971. When their kids were in high school, David and Susan enjoyed being able to go to all of their kids’ events.
Dave loved working for the City of Morris. His favorite shift was from 11pm to 7am. He enjoyed patrolling at night and checking every door, front to back, for local businesses. At this time, David also served on the city’s ambulance service. David trained the area EMTs with his children, Becky and Paul, often playing the victims.
After 33 years with the Morris Police Department, Dave retired and worked as a transport officer with the Stevens County Sheriff's Department. Dave’s favorite time was walking the grounds of the Stevens County Fair as part of the Sheriff's Department & with the Posse. He loved visiting with everyone he saw.
Besides law enforcement, David was active on the city’s planning commission and was a security guard at UMM for some time. David trained the county’s youth in snowmobile, ATV, and firearm safety for the DNR. Dave restarted the Morris Boy Scout Troop when no one was available. Dave was a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons and the American Legion.
David was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, kayaking, biking, rollerblading, snowmobiling, and even golfing. Dave also loved to do woodcarving. Dave even helped Susan’s students learn how to carve in the art classes she taught in Hancock.
In 2010, Dave oversaw the building of his future lake home, where he was able to enjoy the outdoors. His favorite activity at the lake was to feed the deer that come to his yard and ask for food. He named some of the deer and would have conversations with them. The deer would allow Dave to get close to them.
David died Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the St. Cloud Hospital. He was 80 years old.
At the age of 16, David was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha. His father, "Bill", daughter, Becky (Borders) Stevenson, sister, Helen Morrison, (Edward Morrison), brother, Bob Stevenson, (Harriet), and niece, Barbara have also preceded him in death.
Dave is survived by his wife of 57 years, Susan and their son Paul (Pamela), grandsons Derrick and Daniel Borders and Craig (Hannah) and Shane Pickerill, and great-granddaughters Shae and Ellie.
