Memorial services for Bill Underwood of Donnelly will be held Saturday, June 15, at 11:00 am at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, rural Donnelly. Reverend Judy Gelinske will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Morris American Legion, VFW and AmVets.
David William "Bill" Underwood was born March 23, 1920, on the family farm near Maynard, Minnesota, to David Wallace and Maude Disney Underwood. He was baptized at the Maynard Presbyterian Church and confirmed at Wang Lutheran Church, rural Maynard. Bill graduated from Maynard High School in 1938. He worked on the family farm and the Maynard Co-op. Creamery. In 1942 he was drafted into the Army Air Corp and spent 3 years in India and Burma during WWII.
Bill was united in marriage to Evelyn Holien on December 16, 1945. Bill, Evelyn and family lived in several towns in their early years and spent the majority of their lives in Donnelly. Bill was employed in the dairy industry before joining the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Donnelly. He continued to serve on their Board of Directors until he was 88 years old.
Bill was an active member of Kongsvinger Lutheran Church. He was a WWII Veteran and member of the Morris American Legion and VFW. He was a prize winning butter maker, active in the American Dairy Association, helped establish the Donnelly Threshing Bee, served as city clerk and did income taxes. Bill enjoyed golfing, bowling, singing, playing cards, fishing and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Bill passed away Monday, June 10, 2013 at West Wind Village in Morris, having lived to reach the age of 93 years.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, children Karen (Gary) Uphoff of Donnelly, Jerry (Marilyn) Underwood of Mankato, and Deb (Gary) McIntyre of Maplewood, seven grandchildren: Susan Uphoff, Alan (Mary) Uphoff, Mark (Amy) Underwood, Darin (Stacy) Underwood, Sarah (Adrian) Twa, Brianna McIntyre and Andrew McIntyre, eight great-grandchildren: Patrick Uphoff, Timothy Uphoff, Alyssa (Darren) Gau, Dalton Luepke, Adam Uphoff, Dakota Luepke, Amber Uphoff and Alistair Twa; one great-great grandson: Connor Gau; sister-in-law: Florence (Conrad) Larson; brother-in-law Gorman (Betty) Velde, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Helen Swanson, Lucile Hein and Carolyn Hultgren and one grandson, Jon Uphoff.
