Dean Olson

Memorial services for Dean A. Olson of Cyrus, MN will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, rural Morris, with Reverend Michael Hanson officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Dean Alvin Olson was born on March 28, 1945 to Alvin G. and Delores M. (Johnson) Olson in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.  Dean grew up in Evansville, where he was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.  He received his education in the Evansville and Elbow Lake school districts, graduating with the Elbow Lake High School, class of 1963.  After high school, he attended Fergus Falls Community College.  On November 6, 1965, Dean was united in marriage to JoAnn M. Burgess at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake.  They made their home in Elbow Lake until 1979 and then Aitkin until 1989, when they moved to Cyrus, MN where they currently made their home.  Dean worked for the Grant County Highway Department for one year before joining the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MN Dot) for 44 years, retiring in 2011.

Dean was an active member of Good Shephard Lutheran Church in Morris, the Elbow Lake Fire Department, City Council, served as the Erdahl Township Clerk and sat on the Cyrus School Board.  Dean enjoyed camping, fishing, sports and his pets: Maggie and Mia.  Most importantly, Dean enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends.

Dean died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris; he lived to reach the age of 72.

Dean is survived by his wife, JoAnn of Cyrus; two sons:  Doug and his wife Heather Olson and their children: Curtis Olson, Kyle Olson and Kaylee Olson, all of Cumming, Iowa; Scot and his wife Holly Olson and their children, Michael Olson (Natalie) and great-grandson, Eli Olson of Little Falls, Matthew Olson, Mitchell Olson and Max Olson, all of Rice; son-in-law, Jim Bright and his children: Taylor Bright and Ally Bright, all of Aitkin; brother, Ray and his wife Linda Olson and their children: Melody and David, all of Maple Grove; and sister, Ann and her husband Fred Lilleboe and their children: Eric, Mark and Tim, all of Maple Grove.  Dean is preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Lynn Olson Bright; father, Alvin G. Olson; mother, Delores M. Johnson Olson; and brother, David Lee Olson.
