The memorial service for Dolores Mae Johnson, of Starbuck, Minnesota will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, with Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Dolores Mae Hanson was born in Beltrami County Minnesota, the ninth of ten children to Norwegian immigrant homesteaders Thorvald Magnus and Sena (Lone) Hanson, on April 17, 1928. She was baptized and confirmed at the Moose Lake Church in Moose Lake Township. Dolores attended country school at Kitchi School in Beltrami County. After her schooling, she worked as a nanny and in a dry cleaner business in Bemidji, Minnesota. Dolores was united in marriage to Arthur C. Johnson on September 27, 1946 in Baudette, Minnesota. The couple made their home on Dolores' parent's homestead, where Art cut timber and farmed. In 1950, the couple moved to New Rockford, North Dakota, where Art learned the dry cleaning business and Dolores cared for the couples young children. They later moved the family moved to Carrington, North Dakota and purchased Central City Cleaners. In 1968, they moved to Starbuck, Minnesota and owned and operated the Starbuck Cleaners. After retiring from the dry cleaning business, Dolores continued to work as the office manager at the Starbuck Clinic. She also held the position of secretary of the Starbuck Chamber of Commerce for a period of time. Art died on December 29, 2010. Dolores became a resident at the Glenwood Retirement Village in the Rainbow Memory Unit from June of 2014 until July of 2015, when she returned to her home in Starbuck, where her family cared for her.
Dolores was a member of the Fron Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, GFWC- Starwaska Women's Club, Starbuck VFW Auxiliary and the Minnewaska Lutheran Home Auxiliary. In many of her civic positions, Dolores held district and state office positions. She was also a Girl Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader, Sunday school and Bible school teacher. Dolores served on the Starbuck City Election Board for many years. She was on the committee in starting "Heritage Day's" and in 2005 she and Art were nominated Grand Marshalls.
Dolores died on Friday, August 21, 2015 at her home, surrounded by her family after valiantly battling Alzheimer's disease. She was 87 years old.
She is survived by two sons, Michael (Jeanie) Johnson and Mark Johnson, all of Starbuck; three daughters, Joanne (Robert) Herron, Glenwood, Sandra (John) Sloan, Maple Grove and Patricia (Jeffrey) Aaberg, Soldotna, AK; one sister, Florence Greenquist, Half Moon Bay, CA and one foster brother, Audie Austreng, Babbit; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, parents, eight brothers and sisters and 3 foster siblings.
Dolores' family would like to give thanks and appreciation to the Glenwood Retirement Village, the staff at the Rainbow Memory Unit and Glacial Ridge Hospital and hospice program for the wonderful care of their mother.
