Hancock

Memorial services for Donald Asche of Hancock, Minnesota,  will be held on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church in Hancock with Reverend Harrison Newhouse officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.  Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Donald Henry Asche was born on July 6, 1949 in Willmar, Minnesota to Henry Jr. and Dorothy (Ulferts) Asche.  Donald was raised in Kandiyohi County and attended public school in Raymond; he continued his education at Alexandria Technical College in Alexandria, Minnesota.   In 1968, Don began his six-year career with the Minnesota Army Reserve as an E-4 until his discharge in 1974.  Don was united in marriage to Cindy VerSteeg at Bunde Christian Reformed Church in Clara City, MN, on April 17, 1970.  They made their home in Hancock where they were blessed with three sons.  For 36 years, Don was the head custodian at Hancock Public Schools until his retirement in April of 2011.  Following his retirement, he continued to live in Hancock.

Don was a member of Hancock Christian Reformed Church in Hancock.   He liked to keep busy and was always fixing or improving things around the house and yard. Don loved to garden, build furniture, and repair anything with a motor. He appreciated hard work, rarely passed up a garage sale or auction, and was known for his sidewalk plant sales and “cash only” auto deals. By far, Don’s greatest joy was spending time with Cindy and their family. He was a full service dad and grandpa, too. He snuggled the kids when they were babies, played on the floor with them when they were toddlers, and taught them to dance, drive a golf cart, and tell jokes when they grew older. Don also loved to celebrate – every birthday and holiday was a reason to get the family together to sing, eat good food, and shoot off as many fireworks as possible before the neighbors called the police.

Don died on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at Grand Arbor Assisted Living in Alexandria, Minnesota.  He was 70 years old.

Don is survived by his wife, Cindy of Hancock; three sons: Bryan (Kris) Asche of Alexandria, Matthew (Erin) Asche of Brookings, SD, and Kelly (Christine) Asche of New London; five grandchildren: Avery, Ayden, Fynn, Beaux, and Croix; brothers:  Harlan (Jayne) Asche of Raymond, Marvin (Teri) Asche of Raymond, and David (Vicki) Asche of Alexandria; brothers and sisters-in-law: Sonny (Theora) VerSteeg of Hancock, Sheryl VerSteeg of Hancock, Jerry (Carol) VerSteeg of Hancock, John (Glenna) VerSteeg of Hancock, Jayne (Harlan) Asche of Raymond and Carla (Jim) Lonneman of Hancock, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; grandson, Arie; brother-in-law: Edgar VerSteeg and sister-in-law: Chris VerSteeg.

Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of arrangements for Don.
