Donald LeRoy DeGier, son of Peter and Ella (Biesterfeld) DeGier, was born May 9, 1927 in Hancock, Minnesota, where he was baptized on May 29, 1927 by Rev. W. F. Sprengeler and confirmed on June 6, 1943 by Reverend H. C. Duehlmeier at St. John's Lutheran Church.
Don grew up in the Hancock area and attended Hancock Schools through the eighth grade. He completed his GED on May 17, 1989 in Centralia, Washington. On June 2, 1948, he was united in marriage to Alda Reiners at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hancock by Reverend H. C. Duehlmeier. Following their marriage the couple started farming north of Hancock then moved south of Hancock. They later purchased a farm south west of Starbuck on Lake Emily, where they have continued to make their home.
Don was awarded Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year for Pope County in 1968 by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He worked as an Orthodontics Lab Technician for his son-in-law, Foster for 20 years after he retired from farming.
Don loved to go fishing, especially with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. He enjoyed gardening and just spending time with his family. He also loved to read.
Don died on Monday, October 18, 2010 at Bethany Home in Alexandria, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 83 years.
Don is survived by his wife: Alda DeGier of Starbuck; six children: Cheryl (Foster) Bucher of Centralia, WA, Randall (Brenda) DeGier of LaCrosse, WI, Jerry (Jill) DeGier of Sun Valley, CA, Dennis DeGier (special friend: Linda) of Holmen, WI, Kenneth (Jean) DeGier of Echo, MN and Greg DeGier of Alexandria, MN; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers & sisters: Robert (Jean) DeGier of Hancock, Marge (Don) Poppe of Morris, Eugene DeGier of Morris and Joanne Miksis of Eugene, OR and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister-in-law: Della DeGier; one brother-in-law: Al Miksis and one daughter-in-law: Mary DeGier.
Pallbearers for the service are: Matthew Bucher, Andrew Bucher, Scott DeGier, Andy DeGier, Michael DeGier, Daniel DeGier, Jeff DeGier, Jeremy DeGier and Douglas DeGier. Honorary pallbearers are all of Don's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary Hallauer will serve as organist for the service. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
