The funeral for Donald Ray Poppe, of Morris, Minnesota will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morris, with Reverend Donald Main officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a family and friends remembrance service at 7:00 at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Summit Cemetery in Morris.
Donald Ray Poppe, son of Walter and Hilda (Schliep) Poppe was born on April 26, 1930, in Makoti, North Dakota. He was baptized at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church near Makoti and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Horton Township, Stevens County, Minnesota. Don grew up on his family's farm in Horton Township and attended grade school in District #41. He attended high school at the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, MN. In 1951, Don entered the United States Air Force and for the next four years served as an airplane mechanic for the Strategic Air Command. Until the week he died, Don continued to tell stories of his military brothers and their adventures together.
He was united in marriage to Marjorie De Gier on May 8, 1954 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hancock, MN. Throughout the 1960's, the couple owned and operated Poppe Standard Oil Station in Morris. Later, Don was employed as an auto parts salesman until retirement in 1992. For the next two-and-a-half-decades, he proudly served his sons running errands, maintaining strawberries, trapping gophers, driving grandchildren and tending to their pets.
Don was an active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morris. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., AmVets and 9-F Sportsman's Club. He was a vivid storyteller, loved to catch and especially eat fish; enjoyed traveling to new places with his wife and spending time in his vegetable garden. Throughout Stevens County, Don's red Chevrolet pickup truck was well known to many.
He died on Monday, April 20, 2015, at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris. He was 84 years old.
Don is survived by his wife, Marjorie Poppe of Morris; two sons, Steven (Cindy) Poppe and David Poppe of Morris; two grandsons, Corey Poppe of Morris and Kristofer Poppe of St. Louis Park, MN; one sister, Donna Nibbe of Willmar, MN; one brother, James (Chieko) Poppe, Vancouver, WA, and many special nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, James Nibbe.
