Donald Sievert

Memorial services for Donald Sievert of Glenwood will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck. Burial will be in West Lake Amelia Cemetery in Glenwood. Military rites will be provided by the Starbuck VFW and American Legion.
Born July 12, 1927, at home in Glenwood MN, the 7th of 10 children of Sarah 'Sadie' (Darrow) and Ernest Sievert, passed away July 11, 2014, in Glenwood, one day short of his 87th birthday.Don was baptized July 24th, 1927, at St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Lake Amelia, Glenwood Township, and confirmed there, also by the Reverend Barkow of Swanville.
Don enjoyed track / pole vaulting, basketball and football in school. He worked on neighboring farms. Being sidelined due to rheumatic fever, he went on to serve his country. First assigned with the Seabee's to rebuild Okinawa, Don was then regular US Navy, serving March 1945 through January 1948. He was a plank owner of the USS Rich, DD/DDE820 Destroyer, ending as a Pipe Fitter 3rd Class. He received his GED and completed one and one-half years of college while on board.
Don pursued architecture, then engineering. While a (385) Toronto Terror playing softball, he ran into Betty Svenstad after a game on his birthday in 1950. They were married October 5th of that year, at St Peter's Lutheran Church, St Paul. Three daughters were born to this union.
The Sievert's resided in St Paul, New Brighton, Chippewa Falls WI, Albert Lea, Coon Rapids, Starbuck, and Fairfax SC. After Don retired from KST-Scotsman in 1992, he consulted for another couple years. Other employment included Champion Outboard Motor, Presto Industries, Airmac, Tool Crib, Logic Machine, Queen Products, Glenwood Manufacturing, and a stint as an Arthur Murray Dance Instructor.
He played fast-pitch soft ball from the mound, boxed, bowled, hunted duck, deer, pheasant, grouse, and turkey, fished, and was an avid golfer - golfing his age at 71. His hockey 'career' was very short lived. He was also a long suffering Minnesota sports fan.
Don was a member Indherred Lutheran Church, the Glenwood American Legion, Starbuck VFW, and served with both Honor Guards. He was proud to be a member of the Freeborn County Fast-Pitch Softball Hall of Fame, the Allendale County Hospital Board, the AC Airport Commission, the Minnewaska Golf Course. In 2005, he was honored to receive his diploma from Minnewaska Area Schools. He enjoyed watching wildlife, playing cribbage, card games, and dice, enjoyed 'projects' with the Sievert boys, horses, driving around Pope County gopher hunting, learning new things, and had a very close relationship with all of his family. He woke up every day with a 'good morning!,' had a great sense of humor, was always teasing, and had an awful sense of direction.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Betty; daughters – Karen (Chuck) Crosser, Jonesboro AR, Dawn (David) Rolf, Zimmerman MN, and Melanie, of Starbuck; grandchildren – Donnie Hagestuen, Jonesboro, and Melissa Harrison of Biloxi MS; great-grands – Cecileigh Crosser, Jonesboro, Jeff Jones III of D'iberville MS, and Madison Hughes of Biloxi; step-sister Shirley Martin; in-laws Bonnie and Judy Sievert, Bud Bruhn and Mike Ortt; cousins; many nieces and nephews, friends, co-workers, and golfing buddies.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Lena Sievert; Betty's parents Gertrude and Edward Svenstad; grand-daughter Vanessa Netka; all his siblings – Irene (Cornie) Reibel, Margaret (Art) Deutschman, Ella Bruhn, Arthur (Ksenka) Sievert, Anna (Loyd Sr) Atwood, Chester (Coreen) Sievert Sr, Robert Sievert, Bona Ortt, and Baby Richard; step-sisters – Esther (Ken) Searcy and Irene Martin; in-laws Marjory and Kermit Hitchcock and Bob Kight; niece, Leigh Sievert, and nephews, Dareld Deutschman, Wayne Ende, John Fournier, and Chuck Sievert.
