Donald Smith

Donald Herbert Smith, son of Henry and Emily (Peterson) Smith, was born February 17, 1923 on the family farm in Rendsville Township in Stevens County, Minnesota. He began his schooling in Morris and graduated from Morris High School in 1941. Following his schooling, Don continued to work on the family farm. On January 17, 1947, he was united in marriage to Pauline Wade at Peace (Faith) Lutheran Church in Morris. Following their marriage, the couple moved to their own farm near Morris, where they continued to farm and raise their children. Don retired from farming in 2003. In November, 2006, Don was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and he moved to a nursing home, where he has continued to live until the time of his death.
Don was a life-long member of First Lutheran Church in Morris. Some of Don’s favorite hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping with his family, raising a variety of chickens and fussing over his fruit and vegetable garden. He was a generous man who was always willing to share his garden produce and could always be counted on to tell a good story. Don had a deep love and respect for wildlife and animals, especially his dogs. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Don died on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at the Barrett Care Center in Barrett, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 85 years.
He is survived by his wife: Pauline Smith of Morris; daughter: Nancy and husband, Gene Recibe of St. Paul, son: Dick and Wife, Suzanne Smith of Morris, daughter: Carol and husband, Dan Roehl of Fergus Falls and daughter: Joan Smith of Morris; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother: Grant and wife, Helen Smith of Donnelly; sister: Lois Schueller of Morris and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son: Robert Paul Smith; four brothers: Kenneth, Howard, Gordon and Dale Smith and two sisters: Jean Anderson and Marjorie Smith.
Pallbearers for the service are: Leon Smith, Jim Smith, Mark Smith, Carl Smith, Kevin Smith and Mike Schueller. Honorary pallbearers are: Eric Smith, Nathan Smith, Becky Smith, Grant Smith, Mark Mich, Sam Logan, Leo Riley and Les Huebner. Deb Mahoney will serve as organist for the service with Becky Smith and Mary Huebner serving as soloists. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
