Doris Mae Gausman was born on February 15, 1940, at her family farm in Darnen Township, Stevens County, Minnesota to Joseph and Emma (Luthi) Feuchtenberger. She was raised on the farm with her six siblings and together they all grew up, helping on the farm. Doris received her education in Morris, graduating with the Morris High School class of 1957. Following high school, Doris attended the St. Cloud Teacher’s College as a math major. She was encouraged to become an engineer, but her love of math led her in the direction of teaching high school math. She moved back home and began her teaching career in Alberta and then later Chokio-Alberta Schools for over 32 years until her retirement in 1999. While Doris was in high school, she was introduced to Gerald Gausman, a young man from Alberta. The two began dating and were married on March 25, 1961 at Federated Church in Morris. They made their home on a farm and began their family, welcoming a son, Ronald in 1962, Roger in 1963, a daughter, Karen in 1965, and finally Brent in 1981.
Doris was a great teacher; she saw the potential in all of her students and treated them all fairly. She was so proud of her students and was pleased when some would go on to pursue their own dreams of becoming math teachers or engineers. Until this day, there are many of her former students who will share that Doris was their favorite teacher and made such a difference in their lives.
Doris was also a thrill seeker! She loved the ‘scary’ rides at the fair and was always willing to go with those who needed a riding partner; just last summer, she was still enjoying the rides at the Stevens County Fair. She was a very competitive card player and taught her children and grandchildren to play, she especially loved the family Solitaire competitions and holds the reining Championship Title with her grandson, Derek.
She was a member of Federated Church in Morris, being baptized into the church in adulthood. She served on the ladies’ service group and the Call to Care group. Doris also volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels. She was always willing to help without recognition. She was very humble woman and not prideful. Doris relished in planting and tending to her vegetable gardens each year and would share her produce with others. She loved watching and feeding the birds and also finding a good bargain at rummage sales.
Her family was her greatest pride. She took joy in her children and grandchildren’s service and accomplishments. She spent time baking with all of them, making special treats like: doughnuts, pancakes in the shape of animals, rosettes and popcorn cake. Every time you would stop by, she had her freezer stocked with ice cream, ready to share. She was so thankful for the wonderful family that she was blessed with.
Doris died on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, having lived to 81 years.
