Doris Thompson

Doris Verenda Aaberg, the 6 th child of 13, born to Gilman and Clara (Berg) Aaberg, was born on March 13, 1922. She was raised on a farm south of Starbuck located on part of the land which is now the Glacial Lake State Park. She attended eight years of country school at District #59. She was baptized and a confirmed member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Doris was united in marriage to Grant Thompson on June 29, 1941. Their life together was interrupted with the war, when Grant was called to military service for three years. Doris made several trips by train to see her husband in Georgia before he went overseas. The rest of their lives were spent in Starbuck and made this community their home.




Doris did babysitting for several families around Starbuck over the years. She also worked at the Minnewaska Hospital in laundry and janitorial for 23 years. She was a member of the ladies VFW Auxiliary Post #4582.




Doris died on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, MN, having lived to reach the age of 87 years.




Doris is survived by: one son: Sherman Thompson of Hancock; daughter-in-law: JoAnne Thompson of Glenwood; one daughter: Diane (David) Fricke of Starbuck; six grandchildren: Mamie (Tim) Webber, Becky Thompson, David Thompson, Daniel (Heather) Thompson, Ryan (Laura) Bridges and Sonja Bridges; 12 great-grandchildren: Anthony, Nicole and Benjamien Vangsness, Shawna Thompson, Kayla, Joshua and Karlene Thompson, Mekinze Orth-O’Neal and Luke, Matthew and Raelyn Thompson and Silas Bridges; 2 great-great-grandchildren: Zoey and Skyler Rutten; four sisters: Gladys Braaten of Onamia, Lillian (Arvid) Flaten of Starbuck, Tina Hanson of Salinas, CA and Hilma Larson of Starbuck; one brother: Palmer (Joy) Aaberg of Starbuck and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: Grant Thompson in 2004; one grandson: Kevin in 1995; her parents; six brothers: Clarence, Arnold, Russell, Wallace, LeRoy and Edward and one sister: Dorine.




Pallbearers for the service are: Richard Thompson, Mander Thompson, David Thompson, Alan Aaberg, Harold Larson, Larry Braaten, Roger Aaberg and Anthony Vangsness. Honorary pallbearers are Doris’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Monica Gosseling will serve as organist for the service with Arnie Peterson serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
