Dorothy Jean Mickelson, was born to Clifford and Helen (Leuthard) Mickelson on July 10, 1942 in Morris, Minnesota. Born with Phenylketonuria (PKU), Dorothy's life was limited and had no fear of dangers while growing up on her family's farm. Because of that, at the age of 8 years old, dad and mom made the difficult but loving decision to move her to a facility where she would be safe and comfortable. After living in several facilities, Dorothy was able to move to Starbuck to be closer to home. While residing at Starwood and presently at Shorewood, Dorothy worked at the Day Training and Habilitation Center, where her main job was shredding paper. This was also when Dorothy's personality really began to blossom. Even though she could communicate only that of a 2 year old, she understood a whole lot more and provided her caregivers with organization, comedy and surprises along the way.

Dorothy loved the outdoors, playing in water, roaming the farmyard amongst the animals, car rides, having the wind blow through her hair, movies, popcorn, pop, listening to music, coffee with cream and presents with treats.
Dorothy died on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at her home in Starbuck, Minnesota. She lived to reach the age of 69 years.

She is survived by her mother, Helen Mickelson of Cyrus; sister, Dixie (Dale) Beierman of Pierz; brother, Erland (Jody) Mickelson of Hancock; nieces: Kari (Sam) Matzek, Karla (Bryan) Bearce, Kelli (Jeff) Abrahamson; nephews: Jere (Meghan) Edlund, Steve (Elisa) Edlund, Brett Edlund, Michael (Sarah) Beierman, Mark Beierman and Matthew Mickelson. She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford and one sister, Audrey.

Pallbearers for the service are: Jere Edlund, Steve Edlund, Brett Edlund, Michael Beierman, Mark Beierman and Matthew Mickelson. Honorary pallbearers are all of Dorothy's friends and caregivers. Karl Retzlaff will serve as organist for the service with Sheryle Dahl serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
