Dorothy Ruth (Windhorn) Pederson was born on March 20, 1926 in New Ulm, MN to Edwin and Elizabeth (Schilling) Windhorn. She was baptized and confirmed at Friedens Evangelical Free Church in New Ulm. Dorothy attended school in New Ulm and graduated in 1944. She then attended Mankato State Teacher's College. She came to Starbuck to begin her teaching career in the fall of 1946. It was there that she met the love of her life, Vernon Pederson. They became engaged to be married in 1948, but due to Dorothy's mother's grave illness, she chose to return to New Ulm to care for her until the time of her death that same year. While caring for her mother, Dorothy taught at Mankato North Elementary School. Dorothy and Vernon were married on September 4, 1949 (her parent's wedding date). Vernon moved to New Ulm, while Dorothy finished her 2nd year of teaching in Mankato.
The following year, they moved back to Starbuck and lived on the farm next to his parent's home farm. Dorothy taught first grade in Cyrus for one year. For the next 10 years, however, she stayed home and raised her family of three children, Barry, Barbara and Brent.
In 1960, Dorothy and Vernon quit farming and she resumed her teaching career. She taught one year in Lowry. In 1962, she began teaching first grade in Starbuck, which she continued until her retirement in 1988.
In 1999, Dorothy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. A decision was made to move off of the Pederson farm where they had lived for over 40 years. They bought a home in Glenwood in 2001. In August of 2003, Dorothy moved to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, where she passed away quietly and peacefully on Sunday, October 30, 2005.
Dorothy was a very creative, artistic woman with a passion for interior decorating and design. She also loved to paint and to work with floral arrangements. Vernon and Dorothy had the opportunity to do extensive traveling and camping which gave them great pleasure. Dorothy was an active member of East Zion Lutheran Church. She loved children and touched many lives through her teaching.
