Dorothy Podtburg

Dorothy Mae Young, daughter of John A. and Mary Ella (Ridings) Young, was born on February 10, 1912 in Prior Township , Big Stone County . She started in Country School and graduated from Clinton High School in 1930, after which she attended Moorhead State Teacher’s College for two years. She taught school in rural Stevens County for seven years before marrying Albert H. Podtburg on June 24, 1941. They farmed south of Alberta until moving to Morris in 1958.





Dorothy taught Sixth Grade in Slayton from 1960 to 1966. After she and Albert moved to Ten Mile Lake near Hackensack , she taught First Grade in Walker until 1972. In 1985 they moved to Motley where Albert passed in 1987. Dorothy moved to rural Cyrus to live with her daughter, Pat, in 1995, and to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in 2007.





She loved reading, quilting, making Shirrett rugs and her Miniature Pinscher, Cookie. In 1999 one of her rugs won the Grand Prize at the State Fair in the Minnesota County Sweepstakes Rug Contest.





Dorothy died on Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, having lived to reach the age of 98 years.





Dorothy is survived by one son: Byron (B.J.) Podtburg of Omaha; daughters: Ellen (Vic) Koivisto of Las Vegas and Pat Rathke of Cyrus; her miniature pinscher: Cookie; six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her daughter: Zona Hines; six brothers and three sisters.





Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangments.





In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.
