Dorothy Mae Hinz daughter of Henry J. and Lena (Hinz) Hinz was born on April 15, 1922 at LuVerne, Iowa. She was baptized on May 7, 1922 and confirmed on April 14, 1935 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church at LuVerne. Dorothy attended country school and graduated from Vernon High School near LuVerne. She was united in marriage to Leonard Rolland Wood on June 2, 1940 at Algona, Iowa; through this union three children were born: Gary, Brenda and Dale. The couple farmed in the Algona area until 1958, when they moved to Scott Township in Stevens County near Alberta, Minnesota and continued to farm. In 1983, the couple retired and moved into Alberta. Leonard died on May 11, 2007. In 2008, Dorothy moved to Alexandria, Minnesota to be near her children. In January of 2012, she entered Knute Nelson Home Care in Alexandria.
Dorothy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Alberta, where she was active in the ladies aid and church choir. She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, crocheting, singing in the church choir and baking the best cookies and bread. Most of all, Dorothy will be remembered for her love of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they were the light of her life.
Dorothy died on Friday, June 8, 2012 at Knute Nelson Home Care in Alexandria, Minnesota. She was 90 years old.
She is survived by two sons, Gary (Elaine) Wood, Alexandria, MN and Dale (Donna) Wood, Maple Grove, MN; one daughter, Brenda Knopp, Carlos, MN; seven grandchildren: Cindy Domek, Darren (Lisa) Wood, Karla (Corey Simon) Wood, Jennifer (Tim) Sukke, April (Brandon) Larsen, Andrea (John) Reineck and Jason Wood; twelve great-grandchildren: Gavin Larsen, Victoria Larsen, Jacob Reineck, Cody Domek, Colin Domek, Kendra Sukke, Parker Sukke, Mason Sukke, Justin Wood, Zachary Wood, Tyler Wood, and Makenzie Reineck; two sisters, Geneva Rusher, Adams, MN and Eunice Harter, Aurora, CO; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, Herbert and Francis, two sisters, Deloris Miller and Donna Underberg, one son-in-law, Les Knopp and an infant grandson.
