Duane Busch

July 11, 1923 — August 1, 2006

Duane Eugene Busch, son of Gerhart and Emma (Bierman) Busch, was born July 11, 1923 in Chelsea, South Dakota, where he grew up. He attended school in Chelsea and Brookside in Aberdeen Township, before transferring to Central High School in Aberdeen. Following his schooling, Duane stayed in Aberdeen and worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, Kramers Welding and Bowels and Clark Implement. In February 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in December, 1946. On November 17, 1946, he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Shaw. The couple lived in Aberdeen for two years, before moving to Jamestown, North Dakota, where Duane worked for his dad at the propane plant. In 1962, Duane and Betty moved to Chokio, where they bought the Hardware Store, which the family ran for several years. In 1968, Duane set up a plumbing and digging shop in the back of their residence, which he ran until 1988, when he retired and sold the business to Wayne Schmitz.

Duane was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the Chokio American Legion, the Chokio Volunteer Fire Department and was a past member of the Chokio Commercial Club. Some of his other interests included building clocks, fishing, pheasant hunting and he and Betty loved to travel and visit their relatives all over the country. One of Duane's greatest passions was his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous. He was responsible for starting many new chapters, and numerous people were helped through the AA program thanks to Duane's dedication.
