Duane Lee Sprouls, son of Lee and Victoria (Veile) Sprouls, was born March 3, 1928 in Donnelly Township in Stevens County, Minnesota, where he grew up and attended school. Following his schooling, he worked with his brother, Nels on harvesting crews. On September 27, 1950, he was united in marriage to Rose Marie Kopel. Following their marriage, the couple lived in the Donnelly area and also in Virginia, MN. They returned to the Morris area in 1953 until 1964, when they moved to Kensington. Duane worked at the Farmers Elevator, Ind. OTR Trucking, managed the Farwell Elevator and returned to dispatching at the Farmers Elevator in Kensington. He retired from the elevator in 2000.
Since retirement didn't suit Duane, in his spare time, he drove beet, gravel and grain trucks. He was always busy with his civic duties as Mayor and charitable organizations such as, Chief of the fire department, volunteer driver and Knights of Columbus. He held many offices in the Lions Organization, including District Governor, where he received the Melvin Jones Award. He also served on the Economic Development Committee and the Kensington/Farwell Water District. Duane was a very active member of the Our Lady of the Runestone Catholic Church. His pride and joy was the Kensington Community Center, where he was very instrumental in its development.
Duane died on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN, surrounded by his family. He lived to reach the age of 78 years.
He is survived by four sons: Daniel Sprouls of Moorhead, Jeff Sprouls of Kensington, Pat Sprouls of Kensington and Neil Sprouls of Kensington; three daughters: Michelle Sprouls (and fiancAC.: Brad Bye) of Kensington, Wendy (Marv) Rudell of Kensington and Pam (Shane) Henricks of West Fargo, ND; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers: Nels (Irene) Sprouls of Minneapolis, Darrel Sprouls of Las Vegas, NV and Kenneth (Delores) Sprouls of Delano; four sisters: Darlene Kaehler of Rosamond, CA, Vilene Kussatz of Wood Lake, Marilyn (Darrel) Kirwin of Glenwood and Leona (Vern) Wevley of Morris and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; one son: Timothy; one grandson: Uriah Rudell and his parents.
Pallbearers for the service are Duane's grandchildren: Lee Sprouls, Angie Sprouls, Nicole Belli, Stacy Nelson, Erik Sprouls, Shane Sprouls, Sheena Haack, Amie Borash, Amber Green, Trevor Schlief, Zackery Rudell, Crystal Rudell, Jill Kroenke, Kalee Kroenke and Makayla Henricks. Honorary pallbearers are all who called Duane friend. Lynn Bruss will serve as organist for the service with Cassie Weisner serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
