Earl LeRoy "Bud" Valnes, son of Ray and Vivian (Hendrickson) Valnes, was born April 6, 1937 in Pope County. He was the third of six children. He attended country school and graduated from Hancock High School in 1955. Bud continued his education at N.D.S.U. until April 4, 1957, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He received an honorable discharge on April 8, 1959. In 1960, he was united in marriage to Carol Elhard of Northhome, MN. The couple moved to Wisconsin, where Bud worked in a Sporting Goods store. The couple later moved to Cloquet, Minnesota where he worked for a number of years in the water conditioning business. In March of 1978, he married Lotus Olson. The couple made their home in Starbuck, where Bud worked for various farmers. At the age of 29, Bud suffered a bleed from an arteriovenous malformation in the brain, which he never fully recovered from. On March 15, 2007, 40 years later, Bud suffered a more severe hemorrhage that resulted in his death.
Bud was a former athlete when he was in high school. He played baseball, basketball, football and participated in track. He was an avid fisherman and loved hunting.
Bud died on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, having lived to reach the age of 69 years.
He is survived by his wife: Lotus Valnes of Duluth; two daughters: Shelly (David) Decker of Hines and Melissa Anne Duffek of Antigo, WI; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters: Richard (Caroline) Valnes of Eugene, OR, Betty Anderson of Glenwood, Robert (Barbara) Valnes of Morris, Harvey (Sherrie) Valnes of Lynden, WA and Vickie Bratton of Morris and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Carol; daughter: Sharon and his parents.
Pallbearers for the service are: Bruce Anderson, Jason Bratton, Keith Naig, Charles Naig, Gary Strom and Vince Strom. Honorary pallbearers are Bud's nieces and nephews and very special fishing buddy, Terry. Monica Gosseling will serve as organist for the service with Gary Smith serving as soloist. Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.
