Edna Olivia Nelson, daughter of Nels and Berthea (Unumb) Nelson, was born March 10, 1910 in Holmes City, Minnesota, where she grew up and attended country school. Following her schooling, she worked at the telephone office in Holmes City. On April 24, 1933, she was united in marriage to Maxwell Smedstad. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Morris until 1940, when they moved to Hoffman, where Max purchased a barber shop. In 1950, they moved back to Morris, where Max purchased a barber shop. Edna worked as a receptionist at the Dental Clinic for Jorgenson, Ketterling and Dunnum until she retired.
Edna was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Morris, where she was involved in Ladies Aide, altar guild and taught Sunday school. Edna was an excellent cook and homemaker. She loved to work outside and had beautiful flower gardens, especially her roses. Edna loved to travel. A very special trip was for her 90
th
birthday, she flew to Sweden with her family. To know her was to love her.
Edna died on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at West Wind Village in Morris, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 99 years.
She is survived by on daughter: Carol Carlson of Sleepy Eye; two sons: Gerald (Shirley) Smedstad of San Diego, CA and Richard (Becky) Smedstad of Huntsville, AL; seven grandchildren: Erika (Kevin) Boehm, Jill (Rand) Hayes, Craig (Linda) Carlson, Cynthia (Keith) Shellberg, Chad (Kylie) Carlson, Lisa (Tim) Burkart and Sarah (Jeff) Warner; five great-grandchildren: Braden Burkart, Carson Warner, Alex Burkart, Grayson Hayes and Kara Carlson and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three brothers: Carl, Phillip and Willie and one sister: Olga Backlin.
Pallbearers for the service are: Craig Carlson, Chad Carlson, Steven Smedstad, Tom Smedstad, Scott Smedstad and Jeff Anderson. Deb Mahoney will serve as organist for the service with Ruth Thielke serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
