Memorial services for Eleanor Aaberg of Starbuck will be held Friday, July 12, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Minnewaska Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Reverend Todd Klemme will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Friday, July 12, 2013.
Eleanor Ethel (Simpson) Aaberg, daughter of Victor Morris and Nellie Bathrick Simpson, was born September 10th, 1925 in Hamden, CT. She grew up and attended school in New Haven, CT. She started working at age 16 as a waitress at Pasguale's Hamburgers, later, Yale Law School Dining Hall, than Winchesters in the billing department during WWII. On November 13th, 1943 she was married to Warren Otis Aaberg in New Haven, CT. She became a silent partner in "Silent Service" wives of the U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII.
After moving to Benson, MN, with Warren's family while he was in the war Eleanor worked at Across the Street and Rangaard's waitressing. For a short time she lived and worked in Minneapolis. Upon Warren's return from the Navy, they lived in Connecticut until moving to Benson, Minnesota. They opened Aaberg's Radio and TV where Eleanor was the bookkeeper. They had five children in Benson.
In 1959, Eleanor professed Jesus as her Lord and Savior through confirmation and baptism at St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Benson, MN. In 1963, they moved to Minneapolis. After having their 6th child, Warren worked for KSTP-TV. Eleanor kept very busy with the children, attended PTA at Corcoran School, Mother's Club at Pillsbury House and Senior's Club at Laura Ingall's Wilder School. She volunteered at Deaconess Hospital and Powderhorn Park where even the community kids called her "Mom". In 1986, she accomplished the goal of reading her Bible cover to cover. God's promises became her life focus.
Warren and Eleanor retired together in 1987, in Starbuck, Minnesota. Eleanor joined the Minnawaska Lutheran Home Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, and WMF Circle Bible Studies of Minnewaska Free Lutheran Church.
Eleanor's hobbies were: collecting and sharing clippings and various pins, accumulating knick knacks, festively decorating her home for every holiday, bake sale/fundraiser efforts, and remembering significant days for others with cards.
She enjoyed nature, reading, crosswords, word search, watching TV, good movies, good food, playing cards, dice games, bingo, Elvis, country music, dancing and especially spending time with her family and friends. She had a way of making people feel very special.
Eleanor died on Thursday, June 27th, 2013, at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center in Marshall, Minnesota, at the age of 87.
She is survived by six children: Timothy (Natalie) Aaberg of Winterset, IA, Nancy (Tommy) Brooks of Las Vegas, NV, Jonathan (Gwen) Aaberg of Lakeville, MN, Marjory Aaberg of Minneapolis, MN, Karl (Diane) Aaberg of Las Vegas, NV, and Glenda (Steve) Kvale of Balaton, MN, special nephew; Bill Stohl, 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 65 years, Warren; brothers: Ralph, Vincent, and Victor Simpson; and sister: Irene Stohl.
