Elizabeth Bertha Roe, daughter of Ludwig and Alpha (Larson) Roe, was born January 31, 1921 in Montevideo, Minnesota, where she was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She attended school in Montevideo and graduated in 1939 from Montevideo High School. She continued her education at St. Olaf College and later attended Fairview Hospital School of Nursing. On January 9, 1945, she was united in marriage to Charles V. Carlson in Montevideo by Reverend John Mason. Due to Chuck's service in the Army Air Corp, the couple lived briefly in Texas and New Mexico. Following his discharge, they moved to Braham, Minnesota. In 1951, Chuck was called back to active duty. The family lived in Kirksville, Missouri, Indianapolis and Montevideo while he was in Korea. Following his discharge in 1953, the family moved to Morris. Elizabeth and Chuck raised three children, Margaret, Elizabeth Ann and James. She was a teacher's wife. As those of her generation did, she sacrificed for her husband and kids. She was preceded in death by Chuck on August 6, 1997. Elizabeth was a very good mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time at Bay Lake with her family, reading, puzzles, cross stitch, knitting, watching birds, watching all sports and political discussions. She was a Minnesota fan - Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins and the Gophers. Elizabeth was a member of First Lutheran Church in Morris, where she was a circle member. She was also a member of: the Literary Club, the American Legion Auxiliary in Montevideo, and the Air Force Escape and Evasion Society. She was very mindful of her being the "first" of her generation in the Mr. and Mrs. L. I. Roe clan.
