Elva Louise Peterson, age 78, of Morris, Minnesota, passed away peacefully from complications due to a stroke at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Saturday, November 24, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
She was the oldest child of Harold and Minnie Arnold, born in Fullerton, Nebraska, on June 6, 1934. She attended grade school there until she moved with her mother and sister, Ruth, to LaCrosse, Wisconsin where she attended high school. She met Alvin Peterson on a blind date arranged by her girlfriend and they were married a few months later in Caledonia, Minnesota, on July 6, 1951. After Alvin was discharged from the Army, they moved to Evansville, Wisconsin and the first of their six children were born. Elva began her thirty-plus years of nursing in LaCrosse, Wisconsin when she started working as a nurses aide while her husband attended Browns Institute of Radio Broadcasting. This began a long list of address changes as he gained experience and knowledge in his radio/sports broadcasting career. She obtained her LPN license in Park Rapids, Minnesota. They moved to Morris, Minnesota in 1979 and she has lived in Morris for the past 32 years, working at Stevens County Hospital and the nursing homes in Morris and Benson. She retired from nursing at the age of 66 in 2000.
Elva enjoyed crocheting and cross stitching and has made many afghans and other beautiful things for her family. She also enjoyed her flowers and kept a beautiful yard every summer. She loved her cats, Penny, Norman, and Sweetie, and during her life has had a variety of pets including dogs, parakeets, gerbils, and fish. Elva liked to relax with her good romance novels or just sit and "people watch". She loved to surf the web on her computer and she kept in touch daily through her online internet entries by email or her facebook. She enjoyed text messaging on her phone to everybody even if they were just short messages to let them know she was thinking of them and loved them. She made several new friends on the internet of whom she never met face to face but became a very important part of her life.
Elva suffered from many illnesses over the past several years but she continued to have a positive attitude and great sense of humor. She always put her family first in her life. She had to be both mom and dad when her husband suddenly passed away in 1981. She did a truly wonderful job of raising her teenage children and being available for all the extended family by attending as many functions as she possibly could. Elva's humor has left her family with plenty to remember, smile about, and share for years to come. She loved her family deeply, passionately, and unconditionally. Spending time with her grand children and great-grandchildren brought her extreme joy. Right up to the end of her life, she spoke to her family of her love for them and the young ones. She was so proud of all her family and never stopped bragging about them and sharing pictures of them to anyone she could show. Her home was filled with photographs of each member of her family. She was a strong woman and will be missed tremendously.
She is survived by five children: Steve Peterson of Woodbridge, Virginia, Wanda Peterson (Lenny Sunram) of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Kathy (Scott) Johnson of Olivia, Minnesota, Bobbi (Eric) Poissant of Columbia Heights, Minnesota, and Bill (Rita) Peterson of Morris, Minnesota; thirteen grandchildren: Kali and Rae Peterson, Christin Morelle (Peterson), Thomas, Mandy, and Michael Konze, Amber Dahl (Thorpe), Cody and Kelsey Thorpe, Kari Reed (Freudenrich), Joshua Titrud, Nicole and William Peterson; seven great-grandchildren: Brandon, Dylan, Audrey, Kaylin, Aubree, Bradley, Jacob, and three great-grandson's due to be born any day; seven nieces, six nephews and many others in her extended family.
