Funeral services for Ernest "Ernie" Janisch of Starbuck, MN will be held Friday, April 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Reverend Paul Johnson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Fron Lutheran Cemetery, near Starbuck.
Ernest "Ernie" Janisch, son of Joseph and Malita Janisch, was born March 5, 1929 in Casselton, North Dakota where he lived until he graduated from high school in 1946. He attended Valley City Teachers College and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1950. He was inducted into the Valley City State University Football Hall of Fame in the 90's. Ernie was called into the Korean War in December of 1950, where he was wounded twice, receiving the Purple Heart with a cluster and the Silver Star. After his discharge in 1952, he served as a Training Officer for the 5th Army Reservist Corp and also the North Dakota and Minnesota National Guards. During his 24 year military career he graduated from the Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and Officers Training School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He also completed parachute jump school with the 101st Airborne at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky.
After returning from Korea he accepted a teaching position at Hasting, North Dakota, where he taught and coached for 5 years. He left teaching to work for the Boy Scouts of America as a professional Scout Executive. In the fall of 1958, Ernie and his wife Barbara moved to Starbuck, Minnesota, where he took the position of High School Principal and later served as Superintendent.
Throughout his career in Starbuck he was involved in many community and professional activities: five years as a Sunday school Superintendent and teacher. He served on the original committee for the building of the Starbuck retirement home. He was President of the Lions Club and served on the overall planning committee for the Starbuck Centennial. He also served on the original planning committee for the Minnewaska District Hospital and was Co-Chairman of the citizens planning committee for the new school addition in 1964. Professionally he served three years as Chairman of the District 22 Minnesota School Administrators and was on the Board of Directors for 17 years. Ernie was a charter member and served as Chairman for the West Central Educational Cooperative Service Unit in Fergus Falls, where he served on their board for 12 years. He also served on the Superintendent Advisory Committee for the Morris Special Education Cooperative for 14 years. Prior to his retirement, he served as the Superintendent of Schools for Glenwood, Lowry, Starbuck and Villard School Districts. Ernie touched the lives of thousands of children and young adults in his community during his 32 years of service in Starbuck and other Pope County Schools.
He is survived by his son, Dan Janisch (Rebecca) of Apple Valley; daughters, Diane Janisch (Yohan) of Glenwood, Kungsoon Kim of Wheaton, IL; five grandchildren, six great- grandchildren and Mary Baukol, his care giver and companion of 25 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years Barbara; his parents; brothers, Lawrence and Leo; sisters, Freda Herman, Mary Forket, Elaine Janisch and Ruthie Janisch.
