Memorial services for Ethel Gunvalson of Starbuck, formerly of Cyrus, will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. Reverend John Smith will be officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be at Cyrus South Cemetery, Cyrus.

Ethel Mae Smith, daughter of Frank and Clara (Rasmusson) Smith, was born November 18, 1916 at Aldrich Township in Wadena County, Minnesota. Ethel grew up and attended country school at Aldrich Township, later attending Verndale High School graduating in 1935. After her schooling, she began work as a nanny for a dairy farm family in Staples, Minnesota, where she met Arnold Erlandson. Ethel and Arnold were united in marriage June 26, 1937. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Cyrus, Minnesota where they raised their six children. Arnold passed away June of 1955. Ethel later worked at Tony's café as a waitress. Ethel married Victor Gunvalson on March 22, 1957. The couple continued to live at the family home in Cyrus. In 1961, Ethel began work as a nursing aide at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, Minnesota, where she continued to work for 21 years. After retiring, Ethel continued to live in Cyrus until moving into the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in 2003.

Ethel died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN, having lived to reach the age of 96 years.

Ethel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus where she was a member of the ladies aide, Treasurer for a number of years, and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed traveling, taking bus trips with Victor, reading, making crafts for the Trinity Church Bazaar, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by four sons: Carroll Erlandson of Cyrus, David (Ann) Erlandson of Brainerd, Kenneth (Janet) Erlandson of Alexandria, and Clayton (Annette) Erlandson of Monticello; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Gunvalson; first husband, Arnold (Peggy) Erlandson; her parents; two daughters: Marilyn Schriener and Kathy Scheuss; one brother, Kenneth; and one sister, Pearl.

Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the Funeral Arrangements.
