Eugene Schmidgall

Funeral services for Eugene "Gene" Schmidgall of Morris, MN will be held Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church, rural Morris, with the Apostolic Christian Ministers officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Eugene "Gene" Dwight Schmidgall, son of Henry and Emma (Koehl) Schmidgall was born on June 16, 1931 in Hancock, MN. He grew up in Hancock and enjoyed football, basketball, played French horn in the band and acted in plays during his high school years. Gene met Dorothy Wendt the first day she came to Hancock as a freshman from the country school. He shared with his buddies; "I'm going to marry her someday!" Gene did marry Dorothy, on January 11, 1952 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Horton Township. The couple resided in Hancock and contributed seven children to the school district. During his life in Hancock, Gene was involved in the Fire Department and served as Chief for many years; he also was the Mayor of Hancock for 14 years. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. Gene spent his career around concrete, working at Hancock Concrete Products Co., Inc. from his teenage years and assorted other jobs with his brothers and finishing out his career as President/CEO of the family business retiring in 2007.
He was well respected in the community and considered a fair, trusted man among his peers. Gene and Dort enjoyed traveling to Fountain Hills, AZ for over 20 years and also appreciated the church in Phoenix and considered the membership very special in his life. Gene adored making memories with Dorothy. He also enjoyed making "mean Gene's burgers" for the family during family get-togethers. Mother's Day and Father's Day were always close to Gene and Dorothy's birthdays, so the family made an extra effort to be together for these celebrations.
Gene died on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the West Wind Village in Morris. He was 83 years old.
Gene is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; children: Doug (Pat) Lakeview, IA, Dave (June), Hancock, Lu Ann (Mike) Brandt, Morris, Gary (Rose), Cannon Falls, Patti (Troy) Wiese, Phoenix, AZ, Ruth White, Phoenix, AZ and Andy (Amy) of Morris; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers: Wayne (Dorothy) Schmidgall, Morris, Hartzell Schmidgall, Mediapolis, IA and Gilbert (Barb) Schmidgall, Morris; sister: Darlene Carlton, Bonney Lake, WA and sister-in-law: Virginia Schmidgall, Morris and many many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews…and, of course, many many friends. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Emma, three brothers, Francis, Richard and Don Schmidgall, two sisters, Stella Moser and Gladys Messner, three brothers-in-law, Calvin Moser, Gary Carlton and Frank Messner, three sisters-in-law, Mabel Schmidgall, Corrine Schmidgall and Marion Schmidgall, one great-grandson, Trayton Judkins, and two nieces Sharon Schmidgall and Mary Evink.
