Eva started grade school in Ulm, Arkansas and later attended school in Niagra Falls, New York and Virginia, Minnesota. She cooked professionally in restaurants during her early adult life. She moved to Clearwater, MN, where she resided for 56 years, living the same house for 40 of those years. On June 23, 1942, she was united in marriage to Clarence "Shorty" Maher in Webster, South Dakota. The couple remained in Clearwater, where they raised their family and Eva helped with the family-owned bar business and retail and factory work. Clarence died on April 19, 1965. Eva remained in Clearwater until four years ago, when she moved to Morris. She was a lifelong learner, self-taught in many skills and stressed the importance of education to her children.
Eva was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Clearwater, where she was active in the Women's Guild and was a C.C.D. Teacher and coordinator. She was also a member of Beatty-Humphries American Legion Auxiliary. Her primary interest was her family, devoting much time to making and keeping a home for them.
Eva was an accomplished cook, seamstress, craftswoman and handywoman. She was a renowned local gardener; her garden covered an entire city lot with an impressive collection of perennials. Eva was deeply interested in the nature of her backyard, keeping a daily journal of weather and wildlife. She was an avid bird watcher, in particular, Wood Ducks and Cardinals. She was distinctive in her handwork with her tatting skills, having learned it early in her childhood and continued to do this work until her death. She designed her own patterns and taught classes. She especially enjoyed the time she spent with family and friends.
