Memorial services for Evelyn Underwood of Donnelly, MN will be held Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, rural Donnelly. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Evelyn Ruth Holien, daughter of Christ N. and Clara (Lerohl) Holien, was born September 14, 1922 in Renville County, near Maynard, Minnesota. She was the 5th of 7 children. Evelyn was baptized and confirmed at Wang Lutheran Church, rural Maynard. She attended rural elementary school and high school in Granite Falls, MN and one year at St. Cloud State College. During WWII, she worked at Caterpillar Military Engine Company in Decatur, IL. On May 19, 1945, she returned to Maynard and was employed at the Granite Falls State Bank. On December 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to David "Bill" Underwood at Wang Lutheran Church. The couple worked in the dairy industry for 20 years. Evelyn helped start the "Princess Kay of the Milky Way" contest in both Yellow Medicine and Stevens Counties. In 1958, they moved to Donnelly, where she worked at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank for 20 years.
Evelyn was an active member of Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, the V.F.W. and American Legion Auxiliaries and the All Tops Homemakers. She enjoyed music, golfing, bowling, playing cards and baking. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Evelyn died on Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, MN. She lived to 92 years.
She is survived by three children: Karen (Gary) Uphoff, Gerald (Marilyn) Underwood and Debra (Gary) McIntyre; seven grandchildren: Susan Uphoff, Alan Uphoff, Mark Underwood, Darin Underwood, Sarah Twa, Brianna McIntyre and Andrew McIntyre; eight great-grandchildren: Patrick Uphoff, Timothy Uphoff, Alyssa Gau, Dalton Uphoff, Adam Uphoff, Dakota Luepke, Amber Uphoff and Alistair Twa; two great-great-grandchildren: Connor Gau and Quinn Gau; two brothers-in-law: Gorman Velde and Conrad Larson and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; grandson: Jon Uphoff; sisters: Gladys Hovda, Bertha Weisbrod, Helen Velde and Florence Larson and two brothers: Clifford Holien and Walter Holien.
