Fern Snell

The funeral for Fern Snell, of Chokio, Minnesota will be held on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio, with Reverend Gloria Anderson officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Monday, one hour prior to services at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio. Burial will be at the Summit Cemetery, Morris.
Fern Kummer, the oldest child of 17, of Louis and Lillian (Veysey) Kummer was born on August 9, 1933 in Berg, North Dakota. She attended Sandstone country school in McKenzie County and graduated from Watford City High School. After graduating from high school, she received her teaching certificate. In 1960, Fern moved to the Chokio area and worked as a housekeeper. She was united in marriage to Donald Snell on April 25, 1964 in Herman, Minnesota. The couple made their home near Chokio, where they farmed together for many years. Fern also, sold Avon and cooked at the Chokio-Alberta Public School. After retiring in 1988, Fern and Donald moved into Chokio. Fern and Don were avid bowlers, competing in many leagues. Don died on June 7, 2007. Fern continued to live in Chokio until the time of her death.
She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Mission Quilter's Group. Fern was also a member of the Chokio Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting. Fern loved playing cards with family, especially her grandchildren. She will be remembered for her great cooking and baking; her big pancakes will be a family legacy forever. Fern also cherished her summer months at Hobo Park on Lake Minnewaska, where she enjoyed her friends and love of fishing.
Fern died on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She was 82 years old.
She is survived by: one son: Don (Kelly) Snell of Montevideo; three daughters: Laural "Susie" Rilley of Osseo, WI, Kathie Brunkow of Elbow Lake and Jessie (David) Wolff of Chokio; four brothers: Kenneth (Kathy) Kummer of Keene, ND, Douglas Kummer of Keene, ND, Mike (Betty) Kummer of Watford City, ND and Miles Kummer of Keene, ND; seven sisters: Shirley Norby (Robert Lovaas) of Arkansas, Lorraine Walton of New Mexico, Gladys (Jim) Gregory of Texas, Lorretta Anderson of Watford City, ND, Linda (Jerry) Wilson of Washington, Debra (Randal) Running of Nevada and Donna (Kelly) Berg of Brandon, MN; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Fern was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one grandson, Jeffery Rilley, four brothers, Jerome, Clayton, David and Stanley and one sister, Cynthia Hicks.
