Florence "Flossie" Annetta Helberg, daughter of Anton and Clara (Wilberg) Helberg, was born October 18, 1916, in Framnas Township in Stevens County, Minnesota. She was baptized on November 26, 1916 at Scandia Lutheran Church, and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Kensington on November 29, 1931. Flossie attended school at District #10. Following her schooling, Flossie worked at a defense plant in St. Paul making airplane parts. She worked for her brother-in law, Carl Swenson, as the "best" hired hand he ever had. She worked for her sister Myrtle at Van's Beach, and worked at the West Central School of Agriculture for over 10 years as food supervisor.

She married Harvey Mathison at Aeneas Lutheran Church, rural Kensington on March 5, 1955. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Scott Township in Stevens County, where they farmed and raised their daughter, Vicky. They retired from farming in 1995 and moved into Morris in 1997. Harvey passed away September 12, 2007. Flossie later resided at the Courage Cottage in Morris where she was given the best care.

Flossie was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church serving in the Ladies Aid, teaching Sunday school and bible school, quilting, and bringing flowers to the church. Flossie was a member of the Synnes Tuesday Club and Morris Legion Auxiliary. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, Scott 4-H Club Leader and 4-H food stand manager for almost 20 years. She loved to garden and especially flower gardening. She brought goodies to friends for many years. She embroidered dish towels and made quilts. Her greatest role was being a devoted and dedicated grandmother to Tallack and Thore. They were the joy of her life.
