Florence Sarlette, age 90, of Morris, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17th . She had been a resident of West Wind Village since 2008.
Florence Pearl Frayseth was born in Milan, MN, on Feb. 6, 1922, to N.P. and Clara (Gunderson) Frayseth. She was baptized in the Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan.
Florence moved with her family to Willmar, MN, at the age of 12. She was confirmed in the Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar, and graduated from Willmar High School in 1940. Florence attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, graduating in 1944. She subsequently taught business and commercial subjects at the high schools in Morris, Brooten and Alberta.
Florence met Walter Sarlette while they were both teaching at Morris High School. They were married on August 4, 1946, and made their home in Morris.
Florence and Walt opened Sarlettes Music in downtown Morris in 1953. After Walt passed away in 1978, she and her son Marty operated the store until 1981, when her son Del and his wife Carlene took over the business.
Flo's life-long hobby of photography began in high school. In addition to photographic coverage of her family, friends and travels (including weddings), she did much of the photography for the high school yearbooks in the schools where she taught, as well as the Willmar HS yearbook when she was a senior there. Florence was responsible for gathering, copying, editing and layout of all of the photographs in the souvenir historical book for the 1971 Morris Centennial.
Florence was a knowledgeable and avid collector of antiques. She started her collection with rose-themed china, and expanded her collection from there. She was very fond of any antiques and collectibles of Norwegian origin, including many items inherited from her grandparents and other ancestors.
Florence was also very interested in genealogy, which started with a family history she assembled while attending St. Olaf College. In the succeeding years, she added extensively to the original project with interviews with many family members, examining church and public records, and two research trips to Norway. After these Norwegian visits, she was able to chart her family tree back several hundred years.
At various times in her life, Florence had been active in Students Club, AAUW (American Association of University Women), the Sons of Norway, Eastern Star, the Stevens County Historical Society, and Boy Scouts (where she served as Den Mother for both of her sons' Cub Scout dens).
She is survived by sons Del (Carlene) of Morris, and Marty (Brenda) of Villard, step-daughter Carol (Jack) Dutcher of Vallejo, CA, son-in-law Gerald Pearson of Muscatine, IA, grandsons Peter, Steven and Tony, and several nieces and nephews. Florence was preceded in death by her husband Walt, daughter Suzanne, step-son Richard, her parents, 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.
