Floyd Iver Benson, was born August 23, 1929 to Nels and Edith (Peterson) Benson in Argyle, Minnesota, where Floyd grew up and attended school. In 1946, Floyd entered the military service. On October 15, 1952, Floyd was united in marriage to Doris Lieberg of Warren, Minnesota. To this union three sons were born. They moved to Kentucky, where Floyd continued his military service. He served in the Korean War, Vietnam War and in Germany. While in the Vietnam War, Floyd was wounded and received two purple hearts and a bronze star. He retired from the military in 1967, with 20 years of service. Floyd and Doris and their sons moved to Chokio in 1968. Floyd was a custodian in the Chokio School for 19 years and retired in 1987. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, playing cards and making Klub (potato dumplings) with his grandchildren.
Floyd died on Thursday, August 11, 2005 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, having lived to reach the age of 75 years.
He is survived by his wife: Doris Benson of Chokio; three sons: Jim (Julie) Benson of Wichita, KS, David Benson of Brandon, SD and Richard (Rashelle) Benson of Chokio; five grandchildren: Arin (Brian) Gage, Taesha Benson, Nikki Benson, Matt Benson and Whitney Benson; three great-grandchildren: Austin, Braedyn and Breanna; three brothers: Lambert (Lola) Benson of Houston, TX, Maurice (Jerry) Benson of Thief River Falls and Douglas (June) Benson of Grand Forks, ND; one sister: Gen Johnson of Karlsted and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Lois Courneya and one grandson: Rawdon Hawkinson.
Pallbearers for the service are: Bradley Benson, Brian Benson, Mike Courneya, Bruce Benson, Lowell Benson, Dean Benson, Mike Lieberg and Tim Lieberg. Honorary pallbearers are: Roger De Camp, Ervy Nelson and George Dieter. Julene Amborn will serve as organist for the service.
